Sure, it's powerful and glamorous. But you have very very little free time. The expectations on you are enormous. There's always a party in opposition whose objectives include making you look like you're the worst decision the country ever made. You can't go anywhere or do anything without constant security and it being generally known and publicized. You would sleep about six hours a day. You would rarely get to watch your sports teams. Your full day's agenda is set out every single day - and most of it is work.
I'm glad we have some fairly talented people who want this job - but I think you'd have to be a little bit crazy. Maybe that's why we have had some presidents with borderline mental illness. But I suppose also that these guys are in that life for years by the time they're running for president, and it amounts to getting to the top - which motivates many people.
But so hypothetically, a genie appeared to you tomorrow morning and said "I can make you the President of the United States" tomorrow morning - for the next four years.
Would you say yes?
Not in a million years.
The system has grown bigger than the President, yet the President is given the blame or credit for manifestations of problems that are largely beyond his reach in four years time.

It takes a certain personality type to wake up one morning and think "Do you know who should be the leader of the most powerful country in the world? Me!"
Jimmy Carter is 88
Reagan died at 93
HW Bush is 88
Ford died at 93
True, one of the perks is having the best free health care money can buy. Heh.

I would. I wouldn't mince words either. I'd call people liars to their damned faces and wouldn't care what the media thought. If you are lying, I'm not going to say you're telling half truths. I'm going to call you a damned liar and then run ads showing how you lied. To hell with being cordial. I'd tell the damn truth to the American people whether they liked it or not. That's all people want....most people. If crap is seriously messed up, I'd tell people crap is seriously messed up. I'd have four years to do what I think needs to be done. My press conferences would have to be aired on HBO because I would speak my mind in the style and language that everyday people use. If that means refering to the opposition as M&Fers, then so be it. My point is, I just want someone to come in office and be real. One of the reasons I like governor of New Jersey is because he is real. He says what is on his mind and if you don't like it, tough. When people act stupid with you, you have act just as stupid with them. Meet fire with fire, stupid with stupid until they get the point. If I were president during the debt crisis and there were a group of people saying don't bail 'em out, let them fail, guess what, I would have let them fail. I'd give them exactly what they want. Don't want the big 3 bailed out, fine, let 'em fail and watch the same people saying don't bail them out lose their jobs. Refuse to raise the debt ceiling, fine, I'd end the debate and give them exactly what they want. We all want spending cuts as long as it doesn't impact us. We all want tax breaks as long as we don't have to pay for them. Cut my taxes and make them pay for it. Cut their medicare but don't touch mine. Yeah, I'd love to be president and give the most vocal people exactly what they are asking for. I'd pass an executive order making malfeasance in offense a crime punishable by death and then launch an investigation into each and every congress person. I'd also pass an executive order making lying in political ads punishable by imprisonment and then wait. Call me a dictator or socialist.....no problem, don't want you to be accused of being a liar, I'd pass an executive order doing just the things I was accused of. I'd love to be president. It'll never happen but that's exactly what I'd do.....or at least try to do. Give the people exactly what they want.
