I can't imagine what would make people think that a degree from college points to drive or intelligence. Even so, the $100k in debt better have come with some outrageous, but very hazy memories of the party!

Are liberal arts majors surpassing welfare queens as the new conservative bogeymen?

my BS in Electrical Engineering is going to cost me roughly 35k. I will take that offer every time its offered.
Too many folks go to college for useless degrees. More times then not, those useless degrees have a 50k + driving price. If your going to use loans, then challenge yourself to earn a degree that will not only secure your future, but also those loans you have to pay back.

- please define "useless" in this context
- the degree doesn't cost that the college does - an underwater basket weaving class costs the same as pre-law - if adjusted value is going to be placed afterwards, shouldn't it be placed before as well?
- so you're saying (at least in part) that someone should lock themselves into 50 years of a career they may hate, to pay back a bank that has inflated its loans b/c the universities have inflated their tuitions b/c banks have inflated their loan packages
is this the educational system that best serves this country?

i'll repeat - i'm not saying you can't hae a say in it, i'm saying if one uses a topss out line like, "i don't want my tax dollars going to..." then it's just empty noise unless you break down the entire code and know (within reason) what "your" tax money is spent on
by saying "i don't want my tax dollars going to..." you're tacitly endorsing all the other things you don't realize "you"re funding

Jeez, when did we become a country that expects our azzes to be covered if we were "preyed" upon?
My mom got preyed upon when she purchased a $1,000 vacuum cleaner but I would certainly not expect tax payers to cover her loses. As a graduating student, you should have enough sense to figure out what if you are being screwed. If not, then too damn bad. I was screwed when I was young and took out a freaking loan at 20 something percent interest but I paid my damn debt back as I promised I would when i signed the papers.
If we were to write off these loans, what about all the people that busted their butt and finished paying off their debt? Will they get a refund? What about the kids that purchased a used car at 23% interest? How about a refund for overly and outrageously priced text books? What about the students who ran up credit card debt? Hell, my son was getting applications for a new credit card almost every day.
What about those that decided not to go to college because they feared getting in debt? Do we owe them anything now?
I just don't get this...

I payed off all of my student loans already, so is this program going to be retroactive? Or could this just be a way of trying to stir up a group that was excited about this president 3 years ago?

As the parent of a soon to be 20 yo, I am reading this book to get a handle on the array of issues faced by this generation. These are problems which extend well beyond what degree to pursue. The rest is politics and the "bubble" in education, which is the end result of the tuition inflation. The lack of focus and indiscipline permeates all levels. This is but one facet of a laxness and sense of entitlement. In my workplace, I see this and think my job is secure until and unless I start drooling.

A useless degree? Depends on where you go to get the degree to determine if it is worthless.

What I define useless, in essence I may offend a few folks in here although I don't intend to. If you know (which most people do) how much your schooling is going to cost to go to the University of you dreams or even a cheap 4 year school, you should at least take that into accountability of your degree field IF and only IF you plan on borrowing. Yes I understand the ideal of going to school for what you love to do, but honestly if you borrow 50-60k to go to Prestigious U for a basket weaving degree your throwing money away.
Maybe I am just lucky that I love doing what I'm studying and we get paid extremely well to do it. It just makes me a little sad to know some of my friends have debt (i.e. most of them honestly are liberal arts majors/ graduates) and can't pay them off because of either the job market, or they just simply picked a field they love but doesn't pay much. In no way am I saying unless you are going to be a doctor, nurse, lawyer, or engineer you shouldn't go to school. I just feel like what your going to do while in school should weigh a little bit IF and only IF you are borrowing and not paying out of pocket.

first and foremost - and this is what both sides of the aisle should be talking about - having this big a chunk of the country strangled by debt is crippling the economy
then your essential argument is everyone gets raped so why should this group be complaining about it - so maybe you don't know why the caged bird sings
and if the govt was subsidizing the loan agency that offered the 23% car loan then absolutely there should be some govt redress

Why does it matter who was subsidizing the loans? That does not change the fact that if you borrowed it and signed the papers, then you pay it back. Whether it was government funded or Mafia funded.

It's overwhelmingly clear that engineering schools have omitted the study of English from the curriculum.

It's spelled medieval and while I'm never a grammar nut and have my own love of extra commas,,,,, and hyphens -, this thread is interesting in part due to the spelling and grammar errors on display prominently among those arguing that college is overrated.
ironic
