If you don't mind me asking. Who was the first "board" memeber of Gulf you spoke with. I work for MS Power and gulf is our sister company. I know Scott Teel who is the CFO very well. Just so you know Gulf doesn't have board members.
We all can't know everything though I'm curious how a long time employee of a sister company who's friends with the CFO could be calling people out as uninformed liars while evidently unaware of the management structure of the company being discussed. It's also interesting that you're throwing around very specific numbers which are not borne out by the conversation I had the other night or, more importantly, are completely contradicted by the fact that Gulf Power is LOWERING the rates they charge us by something like 10% this year.
How is it that next year they're going to raise rates 135% yet this year they see fit to decrease them 8-10%?
Of course, I don't know all that much about GP, but I know enough to know that you don't lower rates a year before you're set to have to more than double them due to regulatory changes. I also know that the response to EPA's requirements is understood and been in process for some time. the money, in effect, is already in the pipe and GP continues to reduce the amount of coal they use replacing it with cheap, abundant and clean natural gas. i also know they're buying huge tracts of land near the AL border to build a future Nuclear plant, as well.
One of the interesting things I've learned due to this thread is that the costs we're going to see from GP's nuke work is going to be more than the coal scrubbers. Interesting.....

Ok Gulf is lowering rates because of fuel charges. That is mandated by the FPSC. That is omething that is put into any rate request that a drop in fuel charges result in the rate being lowered to customers.
When the MACT regulation kiks in and the coal plants are forced to close do you think the rates are going to drop?...come on you are smarted than that.
As far as me not knowing about the board of directors, I didn't. I really never get to that end of the business. Just like I don't know many people from the distribution side of our business either. I do know enough about the rates side of the business and the generation side very well. I know what will be going on in all of our industry with the part that has to keep your lights on. Those guys in the suits do all of the stuff they need to do, but most couldn't screw in a light bulb without help.
I'm not making this stuff up as I go. Here is a link for your reading pleasure. Note that some of these numbers don't even begin to consider the fact that many states will have to just shut down plants and but power off the trding market through the grid ( kinda like what ENRON used to do ) and that is very expensive.

Fine, but it seems Gulf Power may not be the best example for your argument. They're prepared. They're adapting. They're already planning to deal with it and, as predicted, swapping over to a superior and cheaper alternative in NG.
I don't see the big deal, but I'll be the first to admit when I'm wrong. However, blaming Obama for something that's been going on since he was 30 is a bit over the top.

Every electric utility company in the US has natural gas generators, but there aren't enough of them to keep up with the load. Yes Gulf has a few, but again not enough to keep up the load. So what will happen when a state like Florida needs electricity, and there is a load demand on the grid to ( just for example ) New York? Someone in Florida is going to be sitting in the dark. Without coal fired generation the US doesn't have the generating capacity to keep up with the load demand. When electricity is in high demand and short supply.... well you know.
I am putting the blame on Obama, because he is in charge of this EPA and he can tell them to roll back this regulation. Thats a fact. This regultion hasn't been going on since he was 30, in case you missed it here is what the article in the link said.
EPA has or will promulgate numerous new rules in 2010 – 2012 with compliance deadlines on, before or near 2015.
If something isn't done about this regulation, we won't be posting on here about it. You will be using your electricity for far more important things, like porn.
Yeah, the world will end if we dont roll back epa.
Fyi, gulf power has a board of directors & porn comes over the same interwebs as sr.
I never said the world would end, I said your bill will go up by 135%.
I do know now that Gulf has a Board of Directors...but like I siad thats not my end of the business and I am fine with that.
And to prove you wrong on the internet....I can look at SR at work but I can't look at porn, not that I have tried or anything

How about streaming porn and sr riding 80 on i10 while talking on the phone about to pull into Nola?
Ain't America grand?

yeah and now my head hurts, but America is still grand and the end of the world won't be borne of any 135% increase in energy due to a proportion of it being derived from coal.

Ok. I know you are the SME on what is going on in the utility business. I mean how much can I know when I didn't know Gulf Power had a board?
If I knew everything, I'd know what SME stands for.
Since the original post about the Board came up, I've learned that the opinion of my friend is that the stink being raised about coal sourced energy is being raised by the coal providers more than the coal users.
This makes perfect sense to me. If coal derived energy prices are going to increase due to EPA regulations as you say, then the utilities are going to shift to other sources. The market dictates this or they would force their own competition or adapt as a 135% increase would cause instant reduction in waste and use. If anything, companies like GP are involved in the fracas because the longer they can put off compliance the longer they can rely on and profit from investments made long ago and the longer they will put off a competitive market from developing from alternative energy.
All that aside, the utilities are highly regulated. GP, if you didn't know, is actually one of the main providers of subsidies in our area for the use of solar and other energy sources. It only makes sense for them to fight to continue using their existing plants and facilities as long as they're economically viable, but it makes more sense for their Board of Directors to look further into the future than next year's EPA changes as they've done in the past with NG and will in the future with the new Nuke plants.

TALLAHASSEE — Gulf Power Co. rates are going down for its Florida Panhandle customers.
The Florida Public Service Commission on Tuesday approved the Pensacola-based company's request for a $58.5 million reduction in fuel charges.
That will knock $9.92 off the monthly bill for a customer using 1,000 kilowatt hours, which is near average, effective July 2.
The total bill would drop from $126.53 to $116.61.
The reduction is because of greater reliance on natural gas rather than coal to generate power for the 431,000 homes, businesses and other customers served by the utility.

I think I had already told you that reduction was a fuel reduction. For now that is great. Natural gas prices are low, but what do you think will happen to the market prices when consumption goes through the roof. I for one don't think prices will stay low. Then there is the issue that rolls around in 2015. Those natural gas burning facilities will have to place scrubbers on those stacks as well. So good luck with that.
