Alright stat hounds...How inflated is this "vaunted" 49ers defense due to their horrible division???
When you have 3 bad teams in your division, you have 6 subpar opponents per season. I am not taking anything away from what they earned this season, but all I hear about is that vaunted defense of the Niners. How legit is it and do they really deserve the credit they have been getting?
So who wants to take a crack at finding out some stats or info regarding this? Like I said, I think they get credit for the stats BUT their division WAS the weakest in the NFC by far.

So...why is the NFC West the weakest division in the NFL when there are divisions like the AFC South, AFC West, NFC East, etc.?

This. The NFC West argument needs to stop. Now.
1) THREE teams finished with the same or better record than the division WINNER last year.
2) The Saints lost to the 'hawks in the playoffs last year. ALOT of that is because that place is freakin' HARD to play in.
3) There were at LEAST 3 divisions with the same number or fewer wins than the NFC West.
4) The 49ers were 9-1 after 10 games and had only played ONE game in their division.
Peeps need to stop with the NFC West thing. Its not accurate anymore.

I think a lot of people would disagree with you. Every team in the East can compete while the West has a team called the Rams which only had two wins this year.

Well, those who would disagree would be ignoring the fact that the NFC East went head to head with the NFC West and the West came out with a better overall record against them.
I don't care about my divisional opponents, they can die in a ditch for all I care. But there are worse divisions in football.

I dont think the NFC east is worse. I think those teams are all better teams, but had inconsistent play. I hate the Cowboys with a passion, but think they are a better team than 8-8 record and better than the low 3 teams in the NFC West.
But, the point of my post is the question...is the Niner's Defense as good as seems or does their watered down division EQUAL inflated stats?

I don't think it's fair to call the NFC west the worst division or that they're really that bad. However, it is a fair assessment to say they do not field any prolific offensive teams.
QB Rating
49er's - 90.7
Cards - 81.1 (Used Kolb)
Seahawks - 79.2
Rams - 70.5
Offense Regular season rankings
Offensive Points
49ers - 11th place (by far the only bright spot in the division)
seahawks - 23rd place
cards - 24th place
Rams - 32nd place
Offensive Total Yards/game
Cards - 19th place
49ers - 26th place
seahawks - 28th place
rams - 31st place
Compare the Saints Offense to the 49er's Offense
Saints averaged 467 yards/game in total offense and 34.2 points per game.
49ers averaged 310 yards/game in total offense and 23.8 points per game. The 49ers are clearly more efficient in terms of points per yard, but clearly less prolific.
So, I think the argument that the 49ers defense is ranked high due to facing 3 teams twice that are not prolific offensively has some merrit, however, it can also be said that at least the 49er's, seahawks, and sometimes the cardinals defense does limit most team's offense. So, it's sorta symbiotic.

Mod note: Shouldn't this be in the Locker Room due to the smack talk? Not tech talk?

yeah...i am slightly on the fence. i really DO NOT want to give them defensive props of that magnitude, but as you said at the end...is it bad competition equals success or the other way around. LOL.

I think all the "shut up about the NFC West" just turned it somewhat into trash talk, so I understand why the Mods would move it. They have been aggressive about that now. It's not your fault though.

I think they moved it to TECH TALK because TECHnically the whiner fans can only TALK about beating us.
