in fact, He's the best pass rusher in the league at LE. since 2007, only justin tuck even compares (44.5 sacks) to williams' (48.5), and williams was even injured most of 2011.

So he may get us the ball back maybe 1 time a game for the chance to what? Score! But without Drew that chance drops down how much? Percentage wise how much of a drop off would our offense have? 3rd Down conversions? Red Zone efficiency? Blitz pick ups? Audibles? Manipulating the Defense? Throwing people open? Tight windows? Escaping the Blitz? Moving the ball down field? 90 seconds left and you are 80 yards away with a must score? Down by 14 in the 3rd Quater and you are not nervous Why? Why all these years has that feeling not happened anymore? Brees

Every player always signs it. No one is going to sit out a year. He'd lose more money that way then simply signing a deal for $18 million a year.
Now do you get why overreacting and starting to talk about trading him is ridiculously dumb? It's an empty threat by Brees, and that's assuming he even said it. It's called negotiating. If you can't handle the ebs and flows, then don't pay attention.
Do yourself a favor and don't throw the best player to ever play for the Saints under the bus now when he'll be a Saint this year, guaranteed.

I, unlike most posters am actually concerned with the wisdom of even re-signing brees to a contract similar to brady or manning anyway. In spite of all of their ridiculous passing stats, those guys haven't won a thing since losing crennell and dungy and all of that defensive talent.

just admitt it bonchie. you pulled those figures directly from where the sun don't shine.

The $23 million number is reported. Our $18 million number is reported.
Anyone that's ever paid attention to a contract negotiation knows that neither side usually gets exactly what they want. Assuming that a deal done in the middle of that range will eventually get done is common sense. It may be higher, it may be lower.
It's certainly not $24 million as you stated though.

The Pats have remained very competetive, but thats just the nature of the beast. You have to cut good players to pay better players. Some teams havn't had a franchise QB in like....ever. When you find one, you ride him as long as possible by doing whatever it takes to keep your team competetive.
There's only a handful of situations like Favre to Rodgers and Montana to Young that have ever happened, so yeah, if you could pull it off, you change the guard, but its so rare to strike twice on 'that guy.'

Just my opinion.
From everything I gather is that the holdup is not the total Monetary value of the contract but basically Drew wants 23 Mill first 3 years Guaranteed. Saints are offering same Monetary value , but wants it spread at 18 Mill a year, but not guaranteeing the 69 million.
I think it is coming down to 69 Million guaranteed.

i don't know.
with schaub? who knows..
63 or great completion % the last few years.
4700 yards + passing without arian foster in 2009.
90 or above qb rating in each of the last 4 years.
many of schaub numbers compare favorably to brees (2004-2008). we might even gain some advantages over brees with schaubs arm strength.
Look, matt ryan had 14 wins in 2010 and alex smith had 14 in 2011.
We can do a lot worse than schaub if we had a decent defense on the other side of the field and still be successful because of all of the talent on offense.

You are comparing Shaub to Brees. NO
Has the kid ever been healthy a full season.
He would still command 15 million, so we give up a proven for a possibility for 8 million

he's been healthy 2009-2010 behind a worse offensive line than brees and without the receiving backs to just dump off to, to avoid hits, sacks and pressure like brees has under payton.
Brees got injured behind a crappy o-line in san diego too.
his cap fig is only 7 mil for 2012.

Schaub is not getting traded. Especially not for a couple of low draft picks as you stated. I have no idea how you are even using that as a tool of argument.
It's a strawman argument.

Maybe Brady will get traded to? Or Rodgers? Maybe we can get them for a couple of low round draft picks.
Not all speculation is created equal.

so we sign brees for what $21 million?
what's YOUR brilliant "save the franchise" strategy to rescue our sorry D?
i mean weren't you the main person driving the fire gregg williams bandwagon? You knock any idea that smacks of saving cap room to improve the D then turn right around and expect the d to improve.
which one is it?

We can make due with an okay D, which I think SPAGS will at least make our D not give up the game. I dont want to find out what our Offense looks like without Drew. It's just the lesser of two evils. I dont want to look like Browns offense, where we are excited to just get a first down.
