That dude sure loves to hear himself talk. Any time a ref has to give a long explanation of a call, it tells me he's bending the rules to make them conform to his interpretation. The next time he refs a game will be one too many.

This. Not only will he screw you on a bad call, but he'll spend half an hour explaining and rationalizing why he's doing it. Turrible.
I like how the #21 SF guy bends over as if he is intimating "just call heads or tails Ed"!
I hated it. It was excruciatingly painful to have to listen to him drone on and on, and just when you thought he was all windbagged out, he kept on going!
I yelled, "Come on, Hoch, just shut your yap and toss the coin already! Geez!"

I actually like Hoculi. The refs have a hard job and are constantly scrutinized, as they should be. I think they do the best they can, and do a WAY better job than anyone on this board could dream of doing. For every bad call I yell at, there are 5 other calls where I say "Wow. How did he see that in full speed and get it right? I could never have gotten that right."
The game is entertainment. It's for the spectators. If the refs want to provide an explanation of what they're doing, then go for it. I'm clearly in no rush if I'm sitting there watching a game. If they didn't explain some of the stuff, half of you'd be on here yelling "WHAT THE HELL ARE THE REFS THINKING?!"
Besides, a lot of us don't need any explanation 99% of the time, but some do. My wife knows football pretty well, but occasionally when refs explain something out of the ordinary, she grasps it a lot better than when they just make the call and walk off.
I once read a long article about Hoculi in a magazine once and for me, it turned him into a person instead of just a soulless "ref". So maybe that's why I like him.
