Most of us have been doing this for longer than we care to remember. It's a false analogy since many will never have the leverage (or the ability to help craft a deal meant to help a large group of people) that Brees has.
But that's exactly the point. How many individuals, given the position to exercise their leverage and be paid what the market deems them full worthy of, would bypass that opportunity? Very few probably would, yet it seems like a lot of Saints' fans expect Brees to bypass his chance to maximize his earning power.
I'm not suggesting that Brees should hold the franchise hostage for an outrageous contract, but seeking a market-value contract as an elite QB is perfectly rational and reasonable.
The people who are saying that Brees should take a bad deal so we might have the chance to re-sign Nicks and Colston are living in a fantasy world.
I know that negotiations take time and I get that he's probably just allowing his agent to do the work, but this is getting ridiculous.
At this point the team is trying to figure out how to fit all it's free agents like Carl Nicks and Colston into the cap space, so the only person that could really be thinking of themselves over the team is Brees.
Maybe this will all work out and we'll get to keep Brees and Nicks while still keeping either Colston or another one of the FA wide receivers that will work out, but if things deteriorate, and it hurts our 2012 chances, I'm leaning towards holding Brees responsible.
HE KNOWS THE GRAVITY OF THE SITUATION. And he's the one that made it urgent by putting negotiations on hold. So the fact that he's not under contract by now, in my opinion, is squarely on Drew's shoulders and it's hurting the team.
Sorry, but that's how I feel. I hope it all works out and we end up with the players we need and have a fantastic 2012. I'm flat out worried.
No part of the problem is with Drew. The Saints front office has had 18 months to do the right thing and pay him as he deserves as the best QB in the NFL.
If you want to be upset, aim your sites on Loomis.

No deal was going to get done with the new CBA looming. So you need to shorten your deal period to 1-2 months; from the point the season started to when Drew shut it down to avoid the distraction.

A lot of deals got done despite the CBA being negotiated. There was nothing preventing the Saints from being ready when the CBA was signed. The issue has been that the Saints do not want to have to pay Drew nearly what he is clearly worth. Period.
And if that does not turn around fairly quickly, it is really going to hurt the team because the Saints really can't navigate the other contracts unless they know how much they have. They won't know how much they have unless they either sign or release Drew.
And, before someone starts saying "Franchise Tag". Drew has said he will not sign (means practice or play) a tag. This is a very sensible and responsible thing to say given the risk of injury in the NFL. He would have no signing bonus and no protection without a contract. If the Saints force him to sit out a year, I'm sure he will.
this is the Locker Room so it's allowed... someone needs to smack you around B

What major deals got done prior to the CBA? I don't see how it was advantageous to either side to try and close on something before the previous CBA ended. As for the Saints being ready, without knowing the new parameters with which they would be operating under a new CBA, how would they go about that? Sure they could come up with a monetary figure, but how were they to figure how to structure it without knowing all the details? Unless you work for the Saints, specifically in the front office with Loomis, I doubt you have any clue if they were ready or not.
Best QB in the league and about to sign his last big contract after not whining for the last 6 years and some of you think this guy shouldn't be trying to get all he's worth? Drew Brees is a classy individual and great team player, he more than deserves top salary. Let him take less than he's worth so he can ease some of your minds about a game, while not taking full advantage of a situation in his LIFE.
No need for this speculation and panic yet, but anyone who is already thinking about souring on Brees needs to jump off the bandwagon now. This man is a once in a lifetime franchise quarterback on the level of Johnny Unitas. What he has done for the city of New Orleans and the Saints is beyond measure. He deserves every cent that he is asking for without any consideration in regards to the looming cap problems. For those of you who disagree, think long and hard of what we all felt like being a Saints fan before Mr. Brees started wearing the black and gold. We are winners now. Thank God for Drew Brees - Pay the Man!
This is irrelevant. According to this logic, Brees should just play for free since he's already set for life.
I didn't say he should play for free. In fact I think his contract should be right in line with Brady's and Manning and, with inflation taken into consideration, he should be the highest paid player in the league. But to say that he is not already "set for life" is ridiculous. He just made 60 million from the Saints, 8 million from the Chargers in 2005 and whatever he made off his rookie contract when he was the 33rd pick in the draft. So he already has a huge amount of money in his pocket and to say otherwise is just not factual.
