Hammock Camping
Anyone ever done hammock camping before?
We're going canoeing/kayaking this upcoming weekend and instead of bringing a tent, I'm bringing my hammock with a mosquito netting.
I'm hoping that I can find a few evenly spaced trees to set up.

That's roughing it a bit more than my current level of acceptability.

I like it, myself. Less stuff to pack and carry and it's alot more comfortable than finding every single taproot under your back when trying to sleep.

Everyone keeps telling me, 'just go ahead and bring the tent'
I always hated when you find a great spot only to find that you missed a rock, twig or there's a root poking up...
But I'm thinking it's going to be pretty good. I'll be sure to take some pics and post em up when done!

Tie it higher than you expect to need. It will stretch overnight with the moisture and weight and you will be on the ground in the morning.
No first use, just witnessed this on more than one occasion.

IMO, far more comfortable than a tent and air mattress. The air flows well so you're more comfortable. Rain fly mounted over the top keep you dry. Hammock conforms to your body better than the rocks and roots. Win/win.

This one can be used as a hammock or a tent. It might solve both your problems. i didn't hear you mention a rain fly.

Oh man that's pretty awesome!
I have the eno doublenest hammock in Green and Khaki
I've made a net to fit over the hammock like a tube to keep the skeeters out.
Finally, I have a 9x11' tarp that I'm going to hang above me in case it rains.
I've got a poncho liner that I'm going to use as a cover so it should be fairly comfortable, considering...

I carry a Hammock and a small tarp in my scooter at all times... But ya know... Many a night have a slept peaceful night swinging between the trees... My GF Likes a tent better...
But sometimes you just have to camp right next to the bathrooms...

when I was with the Marines we used to take 550 cord and a poncho liner to make a hammock. We never used tents. I remember having a shelter half issued to me, but never setting it up.

eno doublenest hammock is what I use with a 12ft x 12ft nylon tarp, may have pics later of setup, but as said before, hang the hammock higher and tighter than needed and the tarp low. When it rains with wind blowing you will know why the tarp has to follow the sag of the hammock with you and the corners of the tarp should be perpendicular to the lenght of the hammock for max. coverage to the sides.

Thanks a bunch, I'm pretty pumped to be trying this out. I've got some stakes to stake the hammock to the ground. With the forecast, I may risk it and not set up the tarp.

Ive been camping in one of these for 4 years now and only sleep on the ground as a last resort.

Its always easier to find two trees the right distance apart than a flat piece of ground big enough for your tent.
As mentioned hang it high
and
your back/butt will get colder than when on the ground even through your sleeping bag. I use a yoga mat and stay plenty warm all night.

I've been following a guy on the Appalachian trail. He post videos time to time. Loner AT. He has been using a hammock and a tarp the entire trip. He seems none the worse for wear.

What do y'all think is the youngest a kid could use/enjoy hammock camping
And would anyone recommend tying two hammocks as bunk beds or is it best in 2 different locations with 2 different tarps?
