I picked up Headhunters today in the bargain bin at wallmart for only 7 dollars, I figured it was worth the cheap money as I've never bought an album from him before, and only really listened to his work with Miles Davis.
Great album and artist.. Watermelon Man has been sampled and used by many hip-hop artists over the years..
I "dig" at pawn shops, bookstores, etc. for old "jems" that contain obscure samples used by many hip-hop artists (real hip-hop, not ringtone rappers). This was one of the first albums I copped (got it for a dollar at the thrift store, lol).
Los Hombres Calientes is headed by Bill Summers who was the percussionist for the Headhunters. If you ask nice, they sometimes will still play Watermelon Man.
The beginning is actually him using a beer bottle.

That's awesome! I used to buy used cds from a pawn shop when I was a kid, funniest thing I came home with was a Ministry cd, which I thought was the same band that had recently did Jesus Built my Hotrod and it was some synth pop album from the same band LOL
_Dedication_ was a Japan-only release that is well worth tracking down; nowadays it is on iTunes. It is Herbie solo, but layering the tracks with wonderful early electronics. I actually prefer his Sextant-era stuff over Headhunters ... you might want to try that too if you like Headhunters.

Weird I just listened to Chameleon. Awesome song. I posted it a while back in the listening thread and got neg-repped to hell. Nice to see other people enjoying it.

Yeah, early Ministry was more of a New-Wave, synth-pop sounding band.. The song "Everyday is Halloween" used to be big in clubs back in the 80's. I actually have that record, lol. All in all I have somewhere around 3000 records, from hip-hop (early years-2000), techno/electro/trance, to funk/soul and classic rock..
Then came along Serato and I resorted to only digging for collectables..

You have an amazing collection, far larger than mine. I believe the album was called With Sympathy. Funny thing is I like it that album along with Depeche Mode's Construction Time Again and both New Order Low Life and Power Corruption and Lies are ultimate guilty pleasures in my collection lol

Thank you, I seen the album Thrust, and was thinking about buying that one too. I am not too familiar with Herbie outside those great records he did with Miles Davis. Jack Johnson is my personal favorite that he appeared on.

Hands down, my favorite all-time jazz album; I got the Complete Jack Johnson Sessions 6 cd set several years ago and it was, and still is, mind-blowing.

I am planning on buying that some time. Listened to the Honky Tonk outtake on Youtube and then I had to find the album with that song on it (Get Up With It I think). Those Miles box sets look awesome, seen the In A Silent Way sessions one a while back.

Thanks man, it's from years of being a DJ. I started on vinyl and through digital technology, away went vinyl. I still collect though, and will always keep my collection. NOTHING will ever replace that warm, analog sound that is produced when playing vinyl.
