Slap Bass

Hey guys I've been playing for about a year and a half, off and on due to school and stuff and i've been trying to play slap bass but having some trouble, due to never trying it much before. I've been practicing and making progress but I wondered if there were any bass players that may offer some tips/drills that might help?

Thanks

I started playing bass exactly one year ago. I'm kinda in the same boat with you on the slapping though. When I try to slap, it sounds like I'm banging pots and pans together which is why I hardly ever try.

I think some basses are better for slap and pop than others but I'm not sure.

What kind of bass do you play?

There are a couple of tricks to slapping, depending on how you slap (thumb or hand).

Thumb is probably easier, but really is a different sound, so you should learn both. With the thumb, you can actually let the thumb hit (with the end of the thumb) then fall below the string. Of course, you can also "bounce" it off for a true slap. But the first technique allows the note to sound out better.

The other slap technique, which involves just slapping all of the strings with the hand, requires that you mute any strings you don't want to sound. That takes some work but muting is one of the primary skills for bass and guitar. You can mute strings with the right hand (although that doesn't work so well for hand slapping) or you can use your left hand and palm. I'd recommend starting with the lowest strong (the top string) because it's easier to mute the other strings with the left palm.

Muting's important even with thumb slapping.

I play a Fender Precision bass dude, it cost me 700$ about a year ago. I've been playing about a year and a half ago and have been heavy into it now.

I would suggest doing chromatic scales, just thumb the high and pop the octave--that's a great warmup and a good conditioner, very simple

If you want a good idea of harmonics on bass, listen to Jaco Pastorious. Dude was crazy good.

He was amazing. I know he doesn't have much to do with this thread because he wasn't as into slapping as some of the others, but he's still a name that deserves to be thrown out there.
