Mount and Blade is pretty fun. Addicting. There are mods to make it better as well. You start pretty much as a mercenary knight and go from town to town trading goods, looking for members to add to your personal command. You build relationships with the towns and castles. Towns and castles will give you missions like killing bandits, escorting prisoners and caravans or returning captured daughters to their general fathers and a few other types of missions. You once you build your relationship with a kingdom they will start asking you to help them in battles. You can eventually join the kingdom, start getting other generals to join your side and take over the kingdom. Then take over the country. Or you can just stay freelance the whole time you play. You hire solders to fight, convert prisoners to soldiers, sell prisoners back to their home land. Your soldiers level up from a basic levels to higher grade soldiers. You can also hire a few characters to level up with similar skills as your character. These characters you can give equipment to as well. They will either get along with each other or fight so you will have to pick compatible characters because you will be forced to choose sides or tell them to shut up, which of course lowers your relationship with them.
I guess you get a good enough picture.
