Well the RPG side was totally hollow but the action was actually pretty good. I'll admit the graphics were heavily dated in D2 (still in 256 colors in 1999? ***??) Sometimes its a blast to take on swarms of critters and leave a horde of corpses in your wake, figuring the builds that made you one BMF. I never really played online or went on to the harder modes though.

Webmeistro is an unknown quantity at this point
Diablo = Nethack + graphics + random drop system

The drop system is essentially what kept the gameplay alive. It's so simple, you'd think that all the RPG makers would be implementing it nowadays.

I've played a ton of games but I must say I never tried diablo 1 and 2. The gameplay just looked really bad.

Some of the creative team of the diablo series I believe had a hand in Hellgate London. Hellgate was a blast for a while but it can get repetitive real quick, beautiful game with stunning graphics and the combat is a blast. Unfortunately the game is quite repetitive however.

But I'm sure the REAL diablo 3 will have poor graphics(unlike hellgate) and the combat won't be nearly as much fun as hellgate. But thats not what the diablo series is about though. I might try diablo 3 just for the heck of it.

Do not be swayed by Hellgate London. Many diablo fans agree that was not their best work. You should definitely check it out. You can get the chest with Diablo 1, 2, and the expansion for relatively cheap. I would recommend just playing 2 though.

Diablo 2 is one of the best games I have ever played. It is fun plain and simple. I sunk a lot of hours into 1 and 2 and can't wait for 3. All pc gamers should had experienced it. The thing that kept people playing was items kind of like wow. It was pretty fun gearing your toon up.
