Just toss this one on the heap of unsuccessful wow clones. Sure, subscription sales will probably be high on initial release, but sooner or later all MMOers return to their dark master: World of Warcraft.
I'll see ya'll back on Azeroth once you get your fix for the "new kid on the block."

No, you won't.
I'm one of those sadistic old school EQ guys (actually was playing project 1999 classic emulator since last May) and I won't be returning to Azeroth anytime soon.
I never really got into WoW and my friend base didn't either. I read the FoH forums and they typically rip any new game into complete shreads, then rip it some more, but they havn't done that with Rift.
I think it is what it is - like you said - a dressed up version, but I don't think its going to be an AoC by any means.
The class system is interesting, the developers seem to get importance, they have a good team together and they'll have funding from the massive pre-order sales that have already gone through.
Check out open beta. Starts tomorrow!

I guess its just for the sake of discussion, but yeah the most annoying thing I've discovered in Rift so far is the amount of WoW discussion there is.
I wish they'd have a channel to funnel it into so I can focus on important chat discussion, such as

I hope RIFT works out and pushes the limits of the MMO world.
I've tried about every "other" MMO option out there and enjoyed AoC the most. The first 30 or so levels were fun, until i started to realize how instanced and "small" the world felt.
So dissapointing that the new Final Fantasy online was a dud.
I think most game makers underestimate how important the smoothness of the game engine is in a MMO.
How is the fluidity of movements and such in Rift?

Fluidity is debated. Most people think its nice, but some people have argued very passionately against certain combat motions and casting motions.
Personally, I played a necro and thought it was great, but I'll be trying out the melee this beta and we'll see how it goes.

The sound is really bad in the Beta of rift. I'm telling ya, with better sound effects those complaints about the animations and casting motions would go away.
It's just that the sound effects are honestly, some of the worst I have heard in the history of gaming. Yes, they are that bad. This is a real downer because sound effects are extremely important. Lots of times there are none at all, or terrible ones.. I'm hoping that it's just a Beta thing though.
I'm loving everything else about the game though.

Yeah, and a dab of voiceover would do a lot for immersion. Still, counting the hours until I can get home and log on.

Hmm, more like Guild Wars or more like WoW? Also, will there be a monthly fee?

Oh, more like wow.
I just got done playing around a little bit after downloading the patch for the next beta event that just launched today.
They tightened up a lot. Everything is smoother, and the game does sound a ton better...thank God....everything is more crisp and very smooth and reactive.
This is going to be a dynamite launch.

I didn't even infer that I was threatened by this or any other game. In fact, I really don't have to because I know exactly what's going to happen. People need something new every now and then, I can understand that. Ultimately however, this game will just fall by the wayside. In fact, if at this time next year, Rift subscriptions are at or above their highest point in the first quarter of their release, I'll eat my shoe.
I think the flaw that exists here is that the gamers who occupy the Saints VG board are astute and keen on various gaming elements that comprise a video game. You savor the challenge, complexity, and difficulty of traversing levels and mechanics in game. The reason, in my opinion, on why WoW has succeeded on staying at the top of the mountain so long is because it caters to the majority of the human population that doesn't like to think too hard when playing a video game.
Just think about it, WoW has become dumbed down to the extent where even an 8-year old child can get the best gear in the game, kill monsters, and win. There are over 6 million subscribers to WoW and I'm willing to bet that only 5-10% of those subscribers constitute the super-elite gamers who are actually dismayed enough to quit or try a new game because WoW has gotten too easy.
Rift and all these other MMOs ultimately fail because they tinker with the formula that has made WoW so successful: make the game easy enough to be foolproof. For we know that there are plenty out there, and they like to play games too.

It's obvious you didn't read the thread..
Meh, I'm like 10 steps ahead of you regarding that. I don't suggest "niche" games to people to play...and if they are I warn them. Rift is not a hard game and does not require thought. What will make this mmo successful is RIFT is just simple fun that works..the game is polished, and it is fun. It also offers something new, but not too new to scare away the "steady course" crowd.
This is not eve online. They have quest arrows, and will have dungeon finder..auto joining groups in an area(similiar to warhamers public quest( but for rifts)
What rift does have that no other mmos have
1)Best customization by far(for a fantasy elf/dwarf)
2)Rifts/ tears in the universe than can take over towns...read the thread, not gonna bother rehashing for you.
I've tried out a lot of the mmos, and most are garbage.
There are some that are pretty good though, AOC, Warhammer, and Eq2 come to mind.
However, those games are specialized to a certain degree..eq2 and aoc are too pve heavy and neglect pvp, and warhammer's pve is total crap, it's too pvp heavy.
Rift is actually offering a pretty good selection of PVE and PVP..and guess what? they will have dungeon finder as well(similar to wow)
Best yet, the developers of Rift seem to be listening to the gamers.
Rift is the first fantasy mmo that I can ever remember that will launch with instanced battlegrounds, dungeon finder, quest arrows, and with a nice selection of public quests in rifts that change dynamically and can effect the world.
And it's very polished...
So even though you aren't worried, Blizzard is- as they should be. Mainly I believe for the reasons I'll state below.
Rift is the first fantasy mmo that I can ever remember that will launch with instanced battlegrounds, dungeon finder, quest arrows, and with a nice selection of public quests in rifts that change dynamically and can effect the world. It is also polished and works!
I can't remember one other mmo launching while wow was in existence that can claim that. This is something to think about.

I preordered the collections on their site so I am in the beta. You can get in without preordering though.
This is the last beta before launch and early start begins on the 24th for the preorder people.
There are 6 more days left or so, then beta ends.
The collectors editions seems worth it. Nice goodies!

And the comment about WoW and needing to "fight" the perception that the game might be fun wasn't personal. It's just pretty pervasive and weird online. I'm just not sure why so many bits need to be spilled over why WoW should remain supreme (it seems like a sort of weird fanboi thing to challenge the idea that some people enjoy it rather than just "not for me cool you like it").

Ditto on the preorder and the goodies. It's nice to get fun things digitally for it rather than crap on a shelf, and none are really unbalancing, but the bigger bag for your items and the mount make life a bit easier/cooler.
