I played the first one on PC a few years back. The graphics were definitely dated, but the concept of the game was pretty cool. Just looking it up again, it was already four years old when I played it, so that explains the graphics.
Looking on Steam, it's actually available right now for $2.50

I went into Sniper Elite V2 with one desire: Disfigure Nazis from hundreds of meters away. The game delivers on this core mechanic beautifully. While I would have preferred enemies with less superhuman vision and better stealth options, at the end of the game I couldn’t recall a scenario I didn’t enjoy. Sniper Elite V2 is a must for anyone interested in a smart shooter with an emphasis on gore.

I let this download last night on my Xbox while I played NBA 2K12. From what you described though I need to play this and it sounds like something I'll enjoy. I'm just hooked on My Player Mode in NBA right now because I just beat the Mavs in the conference finals and am about to start game one of the Finals!
