Q and A
Quote:
How many submissions will there be?
We have all the traditional submissions that players would find in the UFC, including arm bars, guillotine chokes, kimuras, rear naked chokes, triangle chokes and even some exotic moves like the knee bar and north/south choke. The really interesting aspect of the submission system, however, is the number of varied positions from which players can attempt to lock in a submission. The arm bar, for instance, is traditionally attempted from the Mount or Guard Positions, and we make sure to include those in the game. In UFC 2009 Undisputed, some fighters also have the ability to perform a flying arm bar from a Single Collar Tie.

How many ways can a fight be stopped? After a serious punishment, can you just collapse from a light punch?
Fights can be ended through knockouts, by tapping out due to submission or by TKO through an accumulation of damage. Much like a real UFC bout, any time a fighter is unable to defend himself, the fight will be stopped.
|
Quote:
Are knockouts preanimated or are they controlled by the engine?
Knockouts are a mix of animation and physics simulation. This approach allows for a variety of interesting knockouts to occur based on where the opponent was struck, what position he was in while struck and the force of the blow landed.

Any way to get out of a rear naked choke? Or is it good game once they start the submission?
All submissions are escapable up to a point. The player will have to time any escape from an arm bar, rear naked choke, etc. as the opponent's move is being executed. Once a sumbission has been fully locked in, however, it is all over - especially with the rear naked choke.

How is training going to work?
Like many traditional fighting games, UFC 2009 Undisputed contains a few different ways to train players in the intricacies of the combat system while keeping their skills polished. Tutorial Mode walks the player through every aspect of the combat system, from strikes and submissions to counters and transitions. The interactive tutorial ensures that upon completion, players are fully trained and prepared for their first fight.
Practice Mode allows players to hone their skills against an artificial oppoenent while displaying important information such as damage of attacks and the location of impact. The practice opponent can be customized to facilitate the type of practice or training experience the player requires. It can be set to simply stand in place and absorb blows, which is great for practicing combos. It can be fully AI or player controlled, replicating the type of experience a player would encounter in an actual fight without the fear of getting knocked out or running out of time. It can also be a mix of both, having particular behaviors assigned based on the intent of the player (such as always try to counter, always try to block the first strike, or always attempt to grapple).
Players who want to practice a very specific facet of the game have the option of instantly placing both fighters into any position or range of their choosing. This eliminates the need to continually have to take down a fighter and pass his guard if the intent is to simply practice locking in a kimura from Side Control, or to practice the timing required to escape from a Muay Thai Clinch.

Explain create a fighter. What can you customize? How about cauliflower ear?
UFC 2009 Undisputed’s Create-a-Fighter allows players to create fighters from scratch that can be used in single player or multiplayer modes. The areas of customization are endless, allowing players to modify everything from hair color and facial structure, to scars and tattoos. And yes, even the level of ear damage can be customized (per ear). In addition, players will also be able to customize their fight gear, Attributes, Fighting Techniques and Fighting Skills. We’ll be sharing more information about these levels of customization in the near future.

How does the judging system work? Can you give us some examples of what things score you points?
For UFC 2009 Undisputed, we use the same 10-point must system that the UFC uses to judge their fights. Fights are scored as in real life by effective striking, grappling and Octagon control. Landing strikes, performing takedowns and transitions or attempting submissions all award points to players. Stuffing takedowns, countering transitions and escaping from ground positions back to your feet also awards points. As with real life, however, there is that X-factor that comes into play when a fight is being judged – what is a particular judge looking for? One judge may place more emphasis on striking, while another places emphasis on grappling. While the preference of the judge when scoring is small, sometimes a match is so close that even the smallest detail can sway the fight.

How will the fatigue system ensure realistic tactical fights?
Just as in real MMA fights, pacing yourself in UFC 2009 Undisputed is important. If you are gassed, you will be less effective in striking, grappling or defending yourself. Players who come out throwing caution to the wind with a flurry of attacks will visibly notice their fighter’s movement slowing, which in-turn decreases reaction time. Picking your shots is something that players will have to pick up on if they want to perform well in later rounds.
Around the office, we’ve noticed that newcomers who pick up the game tend to get overzealous and gas early, leaving themselves open to being knocked out. However, when we play against each other, often times there is a lot of “feeling out” going on and we end up making it into the later rounds.

Will the cuts, bruises, and welts inflicted upon the fighters become more severe or bigger as the fight goes on?
Focusing on specific parts of an opponent’s body will definitely add to the level of visible damage. Cuts will open and begin to bleed more if struck repeatedly while bruising becomes darker and more pronounced as more strikes are landed.

Is there a limit on how many created fighters will be allowed?
You can have up to 100 created fighters at any one time, so there is plenty of room to fill out your stable of fighters.

From what I've been reading, if it happens in the UFC, it will happen on the game.

In honor of UFC 97, set for this weekend in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, THQ is releasing a demo of UFC 2009 Undisputed so fans of the sport can get their hands on the game prior to its May 19 release.
Players can assume the role of either Chuck "Iceman" Liddell or Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, two fighters who will be in the octagon this Saturday. I got the chance to spend some substantial time with the demo over the last few days and if Liddell/Rua plays out anything like a few of my bouts, the world should be in for one heck of a show.
Keep an eye for the demo to drop on April 23 on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network.
