Otherwise it's just pointless speculation unless the OP is able to determine if the BIOS is configured correctly and that an attempt to reinstall Windows using the supplied disks fails. Sometimes I forget just how comfortable I've become around hardware. I open my workstation too, even though we're supposed to get the 'techs' to install stuff.

Yeah, that point crossed my mind too, reading the OP - I wondered if they plugged in a master drive as an source for the image and cocked something up (possibly BIOS) afterwards, but I doubt that's sensible as a mass production process. Imaging the drives before assembling the boxes sounds the most efficient method, but I can't believe a company with Dell's rep would ship units untested either way - hence damage in transit being the most likely cause.
We need the results of a LiveCD boot!!!!!

Drives are also susceptible to electrical spikes, temp chances and condensation as well as phsyical beatings. Or it could have just been a bad drive from the git go. I have seen them fail fairly early.
If it were me, I would not touch anything but the phone, and make Dell fix thier stuff.

Since the computer hasn't been used, I agree with this.

Yeah, it took a full 2 hours on the phone to Dell in India, half that explaining to them that my service tag was not indeed wrong and they should just check up my order number or something, but they sent out a new hard drive.
Engineer came today and put it in for free, so it wasn't all that bad. According to him there is no way in hell the initial HDD should have made it past quality control.

Stuff happens. Did he say if the new drive will already be configured for your system or not?
