African-American teenager shot by neighborhood watch (Verdict: Not Guilty)

Family of Florida boy killed by Neighborhood Watch seeks arrest
By Barbara Liston | Reuters – 15 hrs ago

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - The family of a 17-year-old African-American boy shot to death last month in his gated Florida community by a white Neighborhood Watch captain wants to see the captain arrested, the family's lawyer said on Wednesday.

Trayvon Martin was shot dead after he took a break from watching NBA All-Star game television coverage to walk 10 minutes to a convenience store to buy snacks including Skittles candy requested by his 13-year-old brother, Chad, the family's lawyer Ben Crump said.

I saw this earlier and it's sickening.
The man wasn't even arrested. How in the world can you shoot someone in front of their own home and not be arrested?

This sounds like the neighborhood watch guy was a wanna-be tough guy gun nut and when he saw a young black guy he didn't recognize, he worked himself up into a lather over the chance to prove himself a man. He confronted the teen with his gun drawn and was no doubt extremely nervous, excited, and quick to over-react.

Exactly. If you don't want to get shot by crazy white people with guns, don't live in the same neighborhood with them! Sigh.

You would be surprised.
Back in 1992 or so here in Louisiana, a Japanese exchange student and a friend was looking for a Halloween party they were invited too. They went to the wrong house, rang the bell and was leaving when the homeowner opened his garage door to confront him. As the college student was getting back into his car, the homeowner yelled "stop, freeze!". Thinking he said "stay, please" the Japanese teen turned around and was saying he was he was here for the party. The homeowner shot him. The only reason they even charged him was because of the Japanese governments outcry. He was still acquitted.

It's one of those stories I like to use when people with a hard-on for castle laws start spouting on about how those laws are the bestest thing ever. When people are encouraged to shoot first, ask questions later; bad things like this happens.

I don't have a problem with people owning guns. I can respect that. I do think more training should be required to own and keep guns though. If you want to use guns for self-defense, you should be required to take at least one class a year on the proper use and laws around what you can and cannot do with your gun and a proper level of escalation before resorting to it's use.

In both the OP's link and the example I gave, the gun owner should have never gotten out of his car or left his home to provoke or engage in the people they wrongly thought were doing wrong.

yes we don't know the facts of the actual incident. if it was a acceptable shooting then have the police came out and said that and said why they believe that? has the family really requested teh 911 tapes and have the police really ignored them? what suspicious activity was the guy doing? why did the guy w/ the gun approach him, instead of waiting for police? can i also shoot someone, claim self-defense and not get arrested or is this kid special?

Lawful Self-Defense - Weapons - Division of Licensing, FDACS

Q. What if I see a crime being committed?

A. A license to carry a concealed weapon does not make you a free-lance policeman. But, as stated earlier, deadly force is justified if you are trying to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony. The use of deadly force must be absolutely necessary to prevent the crime. Also, if the criminal runs away, you cannot use deadly force to stop him, because you would no longer be "preventing" a crime. If use of deadly force is not necessary, or you use deadly force after the crime has stopped, you could be convicted of manslaughter.

He should be in jail, according to Florida law. Or at least the matter should be under active investigation.

I have a hard time believing this is the full story, because if it is then something is seriously wrong.

Neighborhood watch leader who fatally shot teen not arrested,... | www.wftv.com

On Thursday, Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee confirmed to WFTV that the dispatcher told Zimmerman to wait for officers to arrive.

However, before police arrived, Zimmerman shot and killed Martin during a scuffle, investigators said. In the recording, Zimmerman said: "They always get away," which could prove the family's case that he was out to get their son that day.

Zimmerman is the name of the shooter.
