Panthers cut NT Maake Kemoeatu (possible FA target for us?)

Panthers released DT Maake Kemoeatu, who tore his tore Achilles in late July. Kemoeatu is expected to be ready for training camp.
|
Like Jamal Williams, another relatively old (31 yrs old), massive NT (6'5'' 345 lb) coming off an injury. Between Jamal and Kemoeatu, I think we sign one of them to fill that space eating DT need.

There will be several options for NT in FA and it'd be a smart move to take a look at all of them and sign one. Clancy just can't stay healthy and Ayodele shouldn't be starting.
Kemoeatu, Williams, or Warren would all make an effective stop gap at NT as long as we are only counting them to be 1 or 2 down lineman. Also it doesn't force us to reach for a NT in the draft. And even if we do draft a NT there is no guarantee that they will be NFL ready.

Exactly, signing one of these older guys gives us a little more flexibility in the draft and like you said we wouldn't have to reach for a guy.

probably the worst injury a player can have besides severly broken bone or severe concussions. The again, Takeo Spikes plays pretty well still, and his position depends on the achilles a hell of alot more than a pocket QB like Dan Marino.

Kemoeatu will probably be down on our list of FA NT's but I think signing one of these guys will be more important than many people realize or care to admit.

Dont get me wrong, I'd love to have him for the same price of Clancy.

Yeah, we need to stay away from injured players.. No way I would sign anyone with a torn achilles or shoulder.
I bet they gonna bring in some people and get a few physicals.. Wouldn't mind some saints related updates!

I'm guessing he was cut because of his contract. If he is expected to be ready for training camp I think he would be a good target if we don't have to pay him too much.

No thanks. That is a bad injury to have and the Panthers are VERY thin at DT. If they even thought he could come back and contribute they would have kept him.

Yeah, when an athlete suffers a serious injury, he should be thrown in the trash heap, especially a shoulder injury...imagine signing an qb with a torn shoulder or even worse a qb with a torn rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder...
/sarcasm off

per roto world. In other words unless it's for league min. Pass
Panthers released DT Ma'ake Kemoeatu.
A botched Achilles' surgery, combined with an impending $9.3 million option bonus, sealed Kemoeatu's fate in Carolina. Once a stout run defender, Kemo won't draw much interest at age 31 coming off a career-threatening injury. The Panthers may try to re-sign him this summer for a minimum-type deal.

I was unaware that his surgery was "botched", but I would still make him an offer just to see if he would stick. I wanted him a few years back when the Panthers signed him and think he would be a nice compliment to Ellis in the middle. We give him a 1.5M deal with another Mill in playing incentives and we have ourselves a run-stuffing double-team-demanding space eater. Worse case is he gets injured again in training camp and gets put on IR, best case he makes the pro-bowl.
Besides, Kemo-Eat-U is a cool name for a nose tackle!

Botched ACL surgery? Geez. Guess he didn't go to Andrews. If I was an athlete that's the first name on my list of prospective doctors.

I have torn or stretched both of mine and if you rehab it correctly, they can come back stronger then before. I say bring the guy in for a physical to see where is right now in his recovery.
