The two guys from that group that has not changed oner the last few years is Ellis and Smith. We have seen too many different tackles in the past and we continue to change them out with one exception and the front still sucks so I see Ellis as the weak guy. Either that or our D-line coach sucks big time.

He's not as big a bust as Sullivan, but I almost never hear his name when I'm watching a game other than player introductions.

Bust? No. Worth cutting? Yes.

For him to be as invisible as he was in a contract year speaks volumes. Dude rarely made an impact play and factor in the amount of money he was paid...see ya.

I wouldn't say he is a bust but out of the two options Bust was the best choice. Cut him -YES. A high first round pick should be a difference maker... Sedreck Ellis isnt' Now if we had drafted in the late first round then it would be a different situation.

Ellis is not a bust, but can be upgraded fairly easily.

He is a bust in terms of 1st round pick and the amount of money he makes in relation to his output. We could have paid a guy in that position 1 million a year and recieved the same results. He is no differnce maker and truly not worth the cap space.

He isn't a bust. He is starting in the league, and will be starting on someones D-line next year. He has the tools, but the guy is a big teddy bear. He does not play with the attitude you want (well that I want) out of a d-lineman. I think he goes, but because he is a FA and will get paid by someone, more than he is worth to us. Which I am fine with, thats just how these things shake out.

This x1000. We've had problems with our front 7 for the last 5 years. And over that time span the only players that have remained the same are Smith and Ellis. We've changed out every other position with either highly rated FA's or early draft picks. And we can't forget the d-coordinator changes. I listened all offseason to people say that Spags was going to put Smith and Ellis in the best position to make plays and sure enough no plays were made.

It's time we realize that they aren't in fact our best players and might just be the problem.

The problem with Ellis is that we traded up to get him and he was a top ten pick. He has never played close to being a top pick as guys picked that high you expect to be pro bowl caliber players. To that end he IMO has been a bust. He has not been terrible but the money we have had to pay him over the course of his contract has clearly not been earned. We can do better at a far cheaper price with guys like Johnson and Hicks.

I do want to mention that it will not surprise me one bit if Loomis goes out and tries to replace Ellis with that 15th pick this year. I just hope if he goes that way that we don't have yet another Sullivan or Ellis as this year we have to hit on our top picks big time!

your idea of a bust is completely misguided. lets look at some of the other DTs drafted around the same time as ellis

Justin Harrell drafted in the first round in 07 by the jets. out of the league in 3 years after amassing only 26 tackles and no sacks

amobi okoye drafted in the first round in 07 by the texans. now plays for the bears. has 177 tackles and 16 career sacks but has only started 1 game in a bears uniform

glenn dorsey everyones favorite comparison. drafted 2 picks before ellis in 08 by the chiefs. has 238 tackles at DE and 4 career sacks

Kentwan Balmer drafted in the first round by the 49ers in 08. played 2 seasons in san fran but never started before going to seattle and washington. he didnt play this year at all and amassed 68 career tackles and 0 sacks

now lets compare those numbers to ellis who has started every game hes been healthy at DT. he has 178 tackles and 12.5 sacks in his career. 1 more tackle than akoye who has a whole year on him. 8 more sacks than dorsey

then there are guys at other positions that are considered busts at other positions

jamarcus russel drafted 1st overall in 2007. played 3 seasons...and gone

vernon gholston drafted 6th overall in 2008. hasnt played since 2010. started 5 games in his career

brady quinn. drafted in the 1st round of 2007. 3 miserable seasons in cleveland starting 12 games and he was shipped to denver where he never played a down. then backing up matt cassel in KC this year and ending up starting threw 2 TDs and 8 picks

do you see the comparison of guys that are busts and guys that arent? i could throw several more in there that werent in the first rounds of the 07 and 08 drafts but i think you get the picture. there is a huge difference between a justin harrel who is out of the league in 3 years and a sedrick ellis who starts every game under 3 defensive coordinators in 3 defensive systems
