ST. LOUIS -- Gregg Williams considers Jeff Fisher one of his best friends. When asked to join the St. Louis Rams' staff, he had to accept.
"I have a very close and tight circle of friends. Not many people get inside that circle," Williams said."He needed my help and I couldn't say no."
Williams agreed to leave the New Orleans Saints, where he helped win a Super Bowl, to become Fisher's defensive coordinator in St. Louis

New Orleans Saints' Pro Bowl players take time to reflect on heartbreaking loss, look ahead to next season

Although New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham insisted earlier this year that he'll retire whenever Drew Brees is done playing so that he doesn't ever have to play with another quarterback, he's been willing to bend the rules this week. Graham also has been reeling in passes from Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers and Carolina's Cam Newton during practices as he soaks up his first Pro Bowl experience in Hawaii.
"Hey, I'm still a young tight end, so I'm gonna catch balls from whoever's throwing them," Graham said via telephone. "But obviously, early in practice, Drew's only looking at me."
Graham, Brees and Saints offensive linemen Jermon Bushrod, Carl Nicks and Jahri Evans are all in Honolulu this week, preparing for Sunday's game between the NFC and AFC all-stars.

Is a New Coordinator Enough Change for Saints Defense?

Full Story – Canal Street Chronicles.Com
I know we're all happy to see Gregg Williams out and Steve Spagnuolo in as defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints. Changes are coming, I think we can only hope they are for the better. But the question I ask all of you today is this: have there been enough changes to the coaching staff to truly make a difference?
I'm talking about assistant and positional coaches. Guys whose names you don't hear very often but still play a huge part in player development and the overall success of the team. The guys that are really working with the players day in and day out, getting their hands dirty and building important bonds. We all look to the top guys when things go terribly wrong, but do the Saints need to trim some fat and add some fresh perspective in the assistant coaching department as well?

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is No. 1 most powerful athlete

The New Orleans Saints' Drew Brees (No. 1), Green Bay Packers' Aaron Rodgers (No. 2) and New England Patriot's Tom Brady (No. 3) top the Bloomberg Businessweek/Horrow Sports Ventures 2012 Power 100 ranking of the most powerful professional athletes in the U.S. To determine who the 100 most powerful athletes are on- and off-the-field going into 2012.
As the business of sports continues to grow, endorsement contracts increasingly impact players, teams, and the industry.
These contracts take into consideration many of the same factors as the Power 100 ranking - performance, name awareness, appeal, influence, trustworthiness and overall popularity, among other things. Social media, for example, played a role in boosting the rankings of such athletes as LeBron James (No. 4) and Shaquille O'Neal (No.7). The Power 100 rankings are based 50 percent on these on "off-field" measurements, and 50 percent on "on-field" performance using a variety of industry statistics.

Five Reasons I Love Being a New Orleans Saints Fan

Full Story – Yahoo Sports.Com
The relationship that exists between the New Orleans Saints and their fans is like none other in sports. To me, being a Saints fan is magical. When the Saints win, the electricity in New Orleans is palpable and fans come together throughout the entire Who Dat Nation.
Born and bred in New Orleans, I would be a Saints fan regardless of how great my team is. However, there are many reasons why being a Saints fan transcends the typical fan experience. Take a closer look at five reasons why I love being a New Orleans Saints fan.
5. Saints players are great citizens
I'm glad I'm not a fan of Michael Vick's or Sam Hurd's team. The Cincinnati Bengals could nickname their locker room "the jail cell." Saints players are great people who help the New Orleans community. I have a friend whose nephew is named McAllister because when his parents met Deuce McAllister, he was so nice they named their son after him.

Full Story – New Orleans Saints.Com
Can you talk about the disappointment of a season being over that had so much potential?
“It definitely is as you get older, because you don’t know how many more opportunities you have. You would like to believe this would last forever, especially when you put together the type of team we had, especially in all phases was right there and ready to make a run. I just think it goes to show you how difficult this game is and how once you get into the playoffs, everybody probably has as good as shot as everybody with one play here and one play there that typically determine the outcome of a football game and still here we are only less than a week removed and it still hurts.”
You talked all season about the high quality of the locker room. Is one of the things that stings is that you might have liked this team as much as the 2009 team? Where would you rank this team as far as the guys you respected and liked?
“Just as much or more than the ’09 team. Each team is unique. Each season is unique. No matter how many of the same guys you have from one year to the next, you still have to establish an identity going into the season or re-establish an identity. That takes time and you pick up where you left off. You’re really starting over every season. I’d say, we have a lot of the same guys on this ’11...

Steve Spagnuolo says he'll seek staff input, build on what New Orleans Saints defense has

As Steve Spagnuolo, the new defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints, knows, the worst thing an NFL coach faces isn't getting fired, it's silence.
Certainly, that was the dreaded prospect in the Spagnuolo household Jan. 2, when, as expected, he was sacked by the St. Louis Rams after three years as their head coach. It turned out, however, the NFL doesn't see Spagnuolo as a man whose time has run out.
Instead, the phone began to ring persistently. Spagnuolo, who cut his professional coaching teeth in the unbrotherly climes of Philadelphia and then earned a Super Bowl ring molding the New York Giants' defense in 2007, was on several short lists of teams seeking a defensive coordinator.

Steve Spagnuolo was in high demand, so Sean Payton didn't waste any time in hiring him as the Saints' defensive coordinator.
I believe Payton was already thinking about hiring the Rams ex head coach before Gregg Williams reunited with Jeff Fisher at St. Louis. Williams lives by the blitz and the Saints blitzed more than 50 per cent of the time. That worked great in the Super Bowl season, but the Saints defenders had trouble dealing with it.
The Saints' hiring earned universally good reviews:
Pat Yasinskas, ESPN.com: "This is a big victory for the Saints because I'm pretty sure Spagnuolo is the guy Sean Payton had targeted for the job, probably before previous coordinator Gregg Williams left for St. Louis". Continued..

New Orleans Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis hits the ground running for the 2012 season

Full Story – Nola.Com
Though he has the luxury of more time this year than he did last, New Orleans Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis is wasting none in the 2012 offseason.
Nearly an hour before college players in attendance for the Senior Bowl were due to walk on stage and be weighed and measured, Loomis was ensconced in a front row seat. And a half hour before the players hit the turf at Ladd-Peebles Stadium for their first practice Monday in Mobile, Ala., Loomis was in the stands.
The alacrity and eagerness with which he's approaching his offseason duties in a non-lockout year might reflect the daunting weight and number of said duties. Loomis must juggle negotiations with some dozen free-agent players, including quarterback Drew Brees, and evaluate draft talent in a year in which the Saints don't possess a first-round pick.

New Orleans Saints GM Mickey Loomis on free agents: daunting but not impossible

Mobile, Ala. - New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said Monday he's aware the club has major free agent issues. Those issues seem even more potentially calamitous than usual because the list includes one Drew Brees, Loomis said, but they are not as unprecedented as some in the farflung Who Dat community fear.
Loomis made no promises on what is to come, although he joked that if Brees isn't back with the Saints, "it'd probably cost me my job." Still, no one on either side appears comfortable with parting ways, which is generally a very positive sign in his experience.
"We have short memories," Loomis said. "There's been lots of times where you've had core players that are unrestricted free agents, that happens, and occasionally you lose some that you don't want to lose. It's part of the business and we just have to move on when that happens.

Field Goal by Tynes in Overtime Sets Up a Rematch in the Super Bowl

SAN FRANCISCO — The ball skittered sideways, shooting out of the punt returner’s grasp, bouncing into Giants lore.
The fumble that the rookie Jacquian Williams caused by reaching his large right hand into the crook of Kyle Williams’s elbow during overtime of the N.F.C. championship game Sunday night does not have the drama of David Tyree’s Velcro-on-the-helmet Super Bowl catch from four years ago. But it accomplished something nearly as improbable.
In a season of remarkable comebacks, the Giants crafted one more. Lawrence Tynes, who kicked an overtime field goal to send the Giants to the 2008 Super Bowl, booted a 31-yard field goal — off a soggy field, with a bad snap, into a heavy mist — 7 minutes 54 seconds into overtime to beat the San Francisco 49ers, 20-17, and create a delicious symmetry.

Defense Holds, and Ravens Miss a Tying Field Goal

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — For some franchises, four years is a fragment of time. For the New England Patriots, it is a millennium. Their transformation over that span has been swift and overarching. Their offense, if possible, is more capable and explosive. Their defense is not as formidable or feared. The imbalance created the perception that they were too flawed, too unreliable, to restore glory to Patriot Place.
Indeed, the Patriots are hardly perfect. But they are the best team in the A.F.C., a distinction earned Sunday with a 23-20 victory against the Baltimore Ravens. New England escaped when Billy Cundiff hooked a 32-yard field-goal attempt wide left with 11 seconds remaining.
“It’s a kick I’ve kicked a thousand times, and I just went out there and I didn’t convert,” Cundiff said.

Yeah. Me, too.
The Saints' mind-blowing loss to the San Francisco 49ers last Saturday, preceded by LSU's stupefying BCS championship game loss to Alabama five days earlier, has been dubbed by some local diehards The Worst Sports Week Ever. A brutal blow. A death in the family. Like "Shark Week," if you're chum.
Undoubtedly, today's NFC championship game between the 49ers and New York Giants -- The Team We Had in the Bag vs. The Team We Crushed Like a Bug -- will serve only to pour more pepper into the Who Dat Nation's bleeding heart.

It should be a busy post-season for New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees in terms of the award banquet circuit. He is poised to rake in a ton of those, even if the one he wanted most eluded him.
Like all truly great players, Brees would trade all such hardware in a heartbeat to once again hoist the Lombardi Trophy as Super Bowl champion. But that won't happen for the Saints next month, so Brees will have to settle for various awards recognizing his record breaking 2011 season in which, among other things, he shattered the mark for passing yardage in a season that had stood since Dan Marino in 1984.

Let me be the first to welcome new New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo to New Orleans, where the search for great defensive football now enters its second decade. Spagnuolo will be the fifth defensive coordinator to coach in New Orleans in the past 12 seasons. Each of his four predecessors -- Ron Zook, Rick Venturi, Gary Gibbs and Gregg Williams -- took over the Saints' defense with great fanfare, and each left town pilloried.
The last defensive coordinator to leave New Orleans on good terms might have been Monte Kiffin in 1995. Or Steve Sidwell before him.
The position hasn't exactly been a launching pad for head coaching gigs. But if Spagnuolo can work his magic in New Orleans, he'll almost surely receive a second seat in the big chair after a failed three-year run as head coach in St. Louis.

There could have been a game in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Sunday. The New Orleans Saints could have been a Super Bowl contender again.
The French Quarter streets would have been full once more but in unison behind one team ... and they would have emptied again back into the bars with TVs if the game came down to a field goal like it did on Jan. 24, 2010. That's when Garrett Hartley kicked a 40-yard field goal in overtime to give the Saints a 31-28 victory over Minnesota in the NFC Championship Game in the dome. Then the streets were full again as the city that wins forgot, for about 40 years, celebrated its first Super Bowl.
The Saints could have been hosting the New York Giants in the NFC Championship Game tonight, had their defense just kept the 49ers off the scoreboard over the final 97 seconds last week in San Francisco. They could have won 32-29, but they lost 36-32.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees echoed the words of coach Sean Payton on Friday, saying that he too would be "beyond stunned" if he's not back in New Orleans next season.
Brees is set to become an unrestricted free agent March 13, but he said he hopes his agent, Tom Condon, and the Saints will be able to hammer out a deal sooner.
"Really the sooner the better," Brees said Friday during a conference call with the New Orleans media. "Now here we are at the end of the season, and it's time to pick up discussions again, obviously once we all get a chance to step away and decompress and let this season kind of settle. New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees says coaching changes just part of the game

With coaching changes already occurring and more possibly on the horizon for the Saints, quarterback Drew Brees addressed the situation Friday.
Brees employed one of his favorite words to describe the hiring of former St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo, 52, as Greg Williams' replacement as defensive coordinator, labeling it "awesome."
Spagnuola's Rams beat the Saints 31-21 in Week 8 this season, and Brees joked that game -- perhaps the Saints' worst offensive performance in the past two years -- flashed through his mind when he learned Spagnuolo and he were now essentially teammates.
"If you can't beat 'em, join 'em -- or have him join you," Brees joked Friday. "We recognize his talent and what a great coach he is, and man, his players play for him. I think he's a very talented, very sharp, very well-respected defensive coach. I've always had a ton of respect for him, and I feel like he is going to make us better instantly. His presence, his coaching ability, his scheme, with our players -- not only defensively but offensively, having to face that every day."

New Orleans Saints had some super times with recently departed Gregg Williams

Steve Spagnuolo has a big headset to fill, and not just because there were times when Gregg Williams' ego seemed to stretch to his 10-gallon size. Williams won a Super Bowl as Saints defensive coordinator, and there was justification for, and supporting evidence of, his swagger in New Orleans.
Spagnuolo has won a Super Bowl ring as defensive coordinator, too, with the New York Giants.
So although that fact absolutely should carry freight with Saints fans, and his hiring looks like a steal for Coach Sean Payton, it remains a significant footnote that the defense hasn't yet done anything under his tutelage, and he's replacing a guy who demanded an attitude that resulted in a championship.

Exit Interview: Defensive overhaul on agenda for Saints

Full Story – NFL.Com
With the 2011 season in the rearview mirror for most teams, it's time for NFL.com's annual "Exit Interviews," a chance to review the ups and downs of each team's past season and spin it forward.
2011 in a Nutshell: Disappointment. Tough to characterize the 2011 season in any other way, due to the fact that many inside and outside the organization felt they could repeat what this franchise did in 2009: win it all. Still, delivering a 13-3 record, a playoff win, and several NFL records on offense represented part of a campaign that many organizations around the league would take in a heartbeat.
What Went Right: Almost anything that draws up images of offense, scoring, or dudes in black tights slam-dunking the ball over the crossbar and running around like little kids ... that went right. The Saints seemingly scored at will, topping 40 points eight times during the 2011 season, including four in a row from Week 15 to the wild-card win over the Lions.
Drew Brees was unstoppable, taking advantage of the rules that consistently limit the manner in which defensive backs can play, throwing for a league-record 5,476 yards and 46 touchdowns.

Gregg Williams shouldn't be the scapegoat in New Orleans Saints loss: film study

By now, the epic NFC divisional playoff game between the San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints has been analyzed and dissected ad infinitum.
Former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has unfairly been made the scapegoat but a loss of this magnitude cannot simply be reduced to one bad decision, no matter how egregious it was.
Yes, Williams' decision to blitz the 49ers in the final minute leading to a back-breaking 47-yard reception by Vernon Davis will long live in infamy for Saints fans. But that ill-advised decision was just one of several factors that conspired against the Saints and led to San Francisco's dramatic 36-32 victory.
Because of the game's high-profile and historic nature, I went into greater detail than normal in this study. I even charted the blitzes on defense because they were such a hot subject of post-game debate. Here's my analysis after watching and re-watching the game several times over the past three days:

New Orleans Saints will aim to keep all their top free agents

First, my glass-is-half-empty view on the New Orleans Saints' offseason: They're facing the scariest free-agent period in franchise history. Although the Saints have thrived despite losing some valuable players in recent years, they've never lost one as important to the team as Drew Brees, Carl Nicks or Marques Colston. These guys are different. They're the elite of the elite, and they can't be easily replaced.
Now, my glass-is-half-full prediction: I think the Saints will keep all three of them.
It won't be easy. Although it's practically guaranteed that Brees will stay, the Saints might have to use their franchise tag on him. And Nicks and Colston certainly will attract a long line of bidders in the open market. By the time they all sign deals, their combined contracts will roughly equal the Gross National Product of a small country.

My initial reaction to the New Orleans Saints hiring of Steve Spagnuolo: Home run. Sean Payton said he was looking for the right fit in his search for the right man to coordinate his defense and he appears to have found him rather quickly.
Payton said Tuesday the Saints would take their time and "talk to a lot of people" in their search for a replacement for Gregg Williams.
Obviously, that was just coachspeak. Payton zeroed in on Spagnuolo right away. He interviewed Spags on Wednesday and reached an agreement a day later today. So much for taking his time.

New Orleans Saints set to hire Steve Spagnuolo as new defensive coordinator

The New Orleans Saints only recently lose their defensive coordinator when Gregg Williams left to reunite with Jeff Fisher in St. Louis. But already, the boys in black and gold have a replacement as former St. Louis Rams' head coach Steve Spagnuolo is set to be hired by the team.
Fox's Jay Glazer reported Thursday afternoon that the former New York Giants' defensive coordinator would indeed sign with New Orleans after a visit with the team earlier in the day.
All this moving around between the two teams (Rams and Saints) is quite ironic in a way considering that the Rams handed the Saints one of their only three losses the past regular season. That loss was actually what turned the Saints' season around and watch them go undefeated from that point on to end the year.

Ultimately, Morstead said, the Saints will take time to recharge physically and emotionally. And they will be ready to come back together as a team in a couple of months to "start trying to build a championship team again."
That process has begun for General Manager Mickey Loomis, Coach Sean Payton and the rest of the front office, who reportedly scheduled an interview with defensive coordinator candidate Steve Spagnuolo today.

The New Orleans Saints have decided to hire former St. Louis Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo as the team's next defensive coordinator, Fox's Jay Glazer reported Thursday afternoon. Prior to coaching the Rams for the three seasons Spagnuolo was the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants.
Former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams left this week to take a job with his close friend Jeff Fisher, who was recently hired to replace Spagnuolo as coach of the Rams. The Saints' season ended last Saturday with a 36-32 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round of the playoffs. The game featured a couple of costly defensive breakdowns in the final four minutes. The Saints also ranked 31st in the league in takeways this past season.

Oden and Jaguars defensive coordinator Mel Tucker have known each other since they both grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, which could help explain the lateral move. Plus, Oden's future in New Orleans may have been uncertain since they will be bringing in a new defensive coordinator.
Oden spent one year as the Saints' primary secondary coach, where he replaced Dennis Allen last year. Before that, Oden was the Saints' assistant secondary coach.

Mike D's Early Look at the Top Prospects for the 2012 NFL Draft
Posted On 07-23-2011

By Mike Detillier - SaintsReport.com Draft and Player Analyst
It's early, but everyone wants to know who are the top senior and select junior prospects for the 2012 NFL draft. Here are my top 32 senior and junior eligible prospects for next April's draft.
Let's get this college football season started.
1. Andrew Luck-Quarterback - Stanford
Luck is my highest rated college quarterback prospect for the pros since Troy Aikman was at UCLA.
2. Quinton Coples-Defensive End - North Carolina
Quinton has skills similar to former Tar Heel Robert Quinn, who the St. Louis Rams took in the opening round in April. Long, very lean pass rush ace who can turn the corner in a flash. Quinton racked up 15 ˝ tackles for losses, 10 quarterback sacks and 10 pressures in 2010.
3. Landry Jones-Quarterback - Oklahoma
Landry is not as athletic as former Sooner QB. Sam Bradford, but he is an accurate downfield passer, who possesses excellent size and very good arm strength. He also is a student of the game. In two seasons as a starter Jones has completed 62.5% of his throws for 7,916 yards, 64 touchdown passes and 26 pass interceptions.
4. Alshon Jeffery-Wide Receiver - South Carolina
Alshon looks a lot like what Arizona Cardinals All-Pro end Larry Fitzgerald did at the University of Pittsburgh. Big, strong, very physical end, who has deceiving openfield moves and speed.
5. Matt Kalil-Offensive Tackle - USC
Matt has some strong football genes running through him. His...
