Replay: New Orleans Saints Thursday chat with Mike Triplett
Full Story – Nola.Com
Why isn't Tom Benson stepping in on the negotiations?
Could be wrong but I thought he did that on Sean Payton's behalf in 2008 when he was signed to an extension? And really is this all a matter of trying to finish Brees contract after the players get their suspension - so there is a finalty on all the bad news to end with Brees' signing?
PR?
I keep wondering the same thing, are they waiting to see if vilma is suspended the whole year in order to be able to use that freed up cap room to make the numbers work for drew's deal? Drew's signing would be a nice PR exclamation point to the offseason if it follows player punishment and the naming of an interim coach.
Mike Triplett: Cap room not an issue
If anything, the Saints will be able to save cap space by signing Brees to a long-term deal. Since they offered him a franchise tender, he's already being charged a salary of between $14-$16 million for this year, which leads to a high cap number.
