Drew Brees record deal actually helps the salary cap for the New Orleans Saints
Full Story – Examiner.Com
Quarterback Drew Brees recently signed a record-breaking contract with the New Orleans Saints worth $100 million over a five-year period. No NFL player has ever averaged $20 million in a season like Brees will, but he didn't want to sign the franchise tender for less money. With signing his larger deal, Brees actually saves the Saints some money.
Before the signing of Brees and final rookie draft pick, Nick Toon, the Saints were only $2.1 million under the salary cap. Toon's four-year deal hasn't seen the financial terms disclosed yet, but it surely hasn't counted against the cap too much.
It is the contract of Brees that changes things most, and helps more than it hurts.
