Second-year defensive lineman Akiem Hicks is one of the New Orleans Saints' most exciting young prospects because of his high upside. His versatility should also serve the Saints well as they transition to a 3-4 defensive scheme.
Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis said Hicks likely will begin the offseason as a backup nose tackle behind Brodrick Bunkley while the Saints are installing their system under new coordinator Rob Ryan. But the 6-foot-5, 324-pounder certainly will be cross-trained at the defensive end spots as well.
"That hasn't been fully determined yet. But he'll probably begin at the nose, then learn the end position as well, as opposed to the other way around," said Loomis, who is high on Hicks' potential after he showed promise as backup defensive tackle during his rookie season.
