Next Woman Up: Gayle Benson, Owner and Chairman of the New Orleans Saints

Women are rising up the ranks throughout professional football, earning positions of power in a space that for too long was ruled almost exclusively by men. We're seeing more and more women breaking barriers in the sport, but what are the stories beyond the headlines? Who are the women shaping and influencing the NFL today? Answering those questions is the aim of the Next Woman Up series. While the conversational Q&As are edited and condensed for clarity, this is a forum for impactful women to share experiences in their own words. Without further ado, we introduce:
Gayle Benson, New Orleans Saints
Position: Owner and ChairmanHow did you get your start in a career in football?
It started when I married my husband, Tom, in 2004, but prior to that, I ran my own successful interior design business in New Orleans. I was actually in that business for 30 years, and after we were married, Tom asked me to put all of my energy into learning the business of football so I would be prepared to lead the team if he couldn't. He was so passionate about football; he just loved the business, and he was chairman of the (NFL's) finance committee for 25 years. The love he had for the NFL was infectious, and because I loved him so much, I wanted to do what he wanted to do and became just as excited about it.
As a side note, he owned an arena football team at that time, and going to a game was our first real date. Once I saw that and got involved in it, I just thought it was the best thing I had ever seen. I just became a real football person ever since.
As the owner of the New Orleans Saints, can you explain what your job entails?
My primary job is to provide the resources and support to our team and staff to give us the best chance to win. I believe, as Tom did, that the first rule of leadership is to show up and be accountable. I'm in the office every day, which I love, and I enjoy mingling with the coaches, players and staff, and [addressing] any challenges or needs that they have to help them prepare to win our games.
As an organization, it's also important that we embrace the responsibility we have to lead, inspire and unite our community, and I try to do that leading by example. ...

Saints re-sign CB Shemar Jean-Charles to a one-year deal
The New Orleans Saints announced that they have re-signed cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles to a one-year deal.
Jean-Charles was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the 5th-round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent 2 years with the Packers before moving on to the San Francisco 49ers practice squad.
In November 2023, Jean-Charles was signed to the Saints practice squad. He was later signed to the active roster on January 4th. Jean-Charles played in three games, mostly on special teams.
Details of his contract are not yet available.

Saints punter Lou Hedley has chosen a new jersey number
There isn’t a new punter kicking for the New Orleans Saints, but the one they have will be wearing a new number. Second-year pro Lou Hedley has given up his No. 39 jersey to switch to the more-appealing No. 15, per the team website. It’s a new number for him after he wore No. 94 in college at Miami.
So who will be wearing his old jersey number? Right now, that’s been assigned to rookie kicker Charlie Smyth. So the Saints’ Australian punter will be wearing No. 15 and their Irish kicker is using No. 39.

6 Saints in the spotlight as offseason kicks off
The New Orleans Saints offseason program kicked off on Monday with players reported for voluntary workouts and weightlifting sessions, officially sliding the calendar into 2024. Everything that develops from here — the 2024 NFL draft, minicamp in May and June, training camp out in California in August, and the start of the season in September — starts with this grind at the team headquarters in Metairie in April.
Some players and coaches are feeling more pressure than others. The Saints are in a bad way amid a three-year playoff drought and the twin departures of Sean Payton and Drew Brees, longtime faces of the franchise. He was a three-time first-team All-American, a record-setter, and able to play both kicker and punter. He is the only three-time All-American punter in NCAA history and was the 11th overall pick in the 1979 draft. He is Russell Erxleben, a K/P from the University of Texas and the player I consider the biggest bust in New Orleans Saints history.
