Longtime Sean Payton assistant coach Joe Vitt is coming out of retirement to work for Payton again.

The Broncos have announced their full coaching staff for 2023, and Vitt’s name was a surprise on the list, as senior defensive assistant.

Vitt coached on Payton’s staff in New Orleans from 2006 to 2016, including as interim head coach in 2012 while Payton was suspended for the Saints’ Bountygate scandal.

The 68-year-old Vitt got his start as an assistant on the Baltimore Colts’ staff in 1979 and has also coached with the Seahawks, Rams, Eagles, Packers, Chiefs, Dolphins and Jets.

The Packers re-signed linebacker Eric Wilson on Saturday, the team announced.

He originally signed with the Packers off the Saints’ practice squad on Oct. 4. Wilson played 13 games for the Packers and tied for the team lead with 13 special teams tackles.

He is a seventh-year player who entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent, signing with the Vikings.

Wilson played five seasons with the Vikings (2017-20) before seeing time with the Eagles (2021) and Texans (2021). He has appeared in 78 regular-season games with 27 starts and totaled 254 tackles, eight sacks, four interceptions, nine...

New Orleans Saints 2023 NFL draft scouting report: Michigan DT Mazi Smith

The New Orleans Saints may have lucked out with the fact that Michigan defensive lineman Mazi Smith didn’t work out at the NFL combine. The Saints still need to add to the interior, and Smith is one of the best options in the draft.

Smith is a big man, at 6’3 and 323 pounds. He’s an athletic freak and it’s a shame that he hasn’t been able to run during the combine or pro day, but he did lead all tackles with bench press reps during the combine with 34.

His size, speed, strength combination will make him a force to be reckoned with at the next level. He can come in and work immediately in...

New Orleans Saints 2023 NFL draft scouting report: Boston College WR Zay Flowers

The New Orleans Saints could still be looking to add some playmakers on the offensive side of the ball, with their free agency additions mainly focusing on the defense.

With Michael Thomas, Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed on the roster, they have a solid group at wide receiver already, but adding a player like Boston College’s Zay Flowers could make this one of the most creative offenses in the league. The room is full of deep threats, which Flowers still is, but his bag is very deep in terms of how you can use him. As long as that thing is not blocking, Flowers can do it.

Flowers is a...

Saints reportedly interested in WR Bryan Edwards

The New Orleans Saints might be looking to sign a free agent wide receiver before the NFL draft in April.

For multiple reasons, 24-year-old Bryan Edwards could be a great match for this offense.

First and foremost, Edwards has over two seasons of experience with quarterback Derek Carr during their times in Las Vegas. Through his two-year stint, Edwards collected 45 receptions for 764 yards with Carr at the helm.

After Jon Gruden was fired from the Raiders in October of 2021, new head coach Josh McDaniels refused to incorporate Edwards into the offense like Gruden had. He was traded to...

It looks like two more former New Orleans Saints are headed to the Denver Broncos to reunite with their former coach, Sean Payton. It was reported that both RB Tony Jones Jr. and WR Marquez Callaway are signing with Denver.

Jones was released by the Saints in October and just days later, he was signed by the Seattle Seahawks. Jones became an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season when Seattle chose not to tender him.

Callaway became a free agent after having a disappointing 2022 season with Saints, catching only 16 passes for 158 yards and one TD in 14 games.

Both signed a...

Saints put first-round CB prospect Cam Smith through private workout

This is intriguing; NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that the New Orleans Saints ran a private workout for South Carolina cornerback Cam Smith, one of the top players at his position in the 2023 NFL draft. Corner doesn’t look like a serious need for the Saints at first glance, with a bevy of highly-drafted players like Marshon Lattimore, Paulson Adebo, and Alontae Taylor on the roster as well as veteran backup Bradley Roby, who signed an extension last summer.

But looks can be deceiving. Lattimore missed 11 games with a complicated injury last season. Roby has had injury concerns too...

It doesn’t seem to stop, does it? The Denver Broncos have poached yet another former New Orleans Saints player, having announced a deal with wide receiver Marquez Callaway on Friday. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler first reported news of the signing, which KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis clarified is a one-year deal.

Callaway saw a reduced role in the Saints offense in 2022 after the additions of Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, Jarvis Landry, and Michael Thomas to the depth chart, but he was one of their leading receivers a year earlier. In 2021 he caught 46 receptions for 698 yards and caught six touchdown passes...

Sean Payton contonues to tap into his former team now that he is the head coach in Denver.

Two Saints free agents are now becoming Broncos.

Running back Tony Jones signed with the Broncos on Thursday while wide receiver Marquez Callaway also plans to sign with Denver, according KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis who indicates both will have one-year deals.

Jones and Callaway both made decent impacts in New Orleans as undrafted free agents. Callaway in particular played significant snaps the past two years but the Saints did not tender him as a potential restricted free agent this offseason.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton is bringing in another one of his former Saints players to Denver.

Receiver Marquez Callaway has agreed to a one-year deal with the Broncos, according to multiple reports.

Callaway entered the league as an undrafted free agent with New Orleans in 2020. His most productive season was Payton’s last with the Saints, as Callaway caught 46 passes for 698 yards with six touchdowns in 2021. That year, Callaway appeared in all 17 games with 11 starts, playing 76 percent of the offensive snaps.

In 2022, Callaway played 14 games with three starts but made 16 catches...

Saints met with Boston College WR Zay Flowers before his 2023 draft pro day

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports that the New Orleans Saints and New York Giants met with Zay Flowers ahead of Boston College’s pro day this week, giving both teams an opportunity to talk shop with one of the top wide receiver prospects in the 2023 NFL draft.

Flowers has drawn a lot of attention for his slight frame — he weighed in at 5-foot-9 and just 182 pounds, but actually bulked up from his playing weight at about 170 pounds last season. He doesn’t bring a great catch radius with arms measuring 29 1/4-inches, but he’s light on his feet with a 40-yard dash time of 4.42 seconds...

Saints, defensive coaching staff emphasizing secondary for good reason

As the second wave of NFL free agency picked up, the New Orleans Saints went back to the open market with a seemingly very specific focus. After adding cornerback Troy Pride Jr. to a reserve/future deal and signing safety Ugo Amadi earlier this offseason, the Saints retained their best special teamer and key depth on the backend of their defense by re-signing safety J.T. Gray to a three-year deal. But they didn’t stop there when it came to building out their secondary. The Saints instead continued to focus on a position group they know best.

Since free agency opened on March 15, the Saint...

Khalen Saunders should provide stability to a revamped defensive line

The New Orleans Saints looked to address what was a pretty depleted defensive tackle group as the team saw both David Omenyata and Shy Tuttle sign with division rivals the Atlanta Falcons and the Carolina Panthers respectively. The Saints went out and signed former Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Khalen Saunders who had a career year in 2022, and knows all about winning having won 2 super bowls with the Chiefs.

Saunders had a career year with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022 playing in a career best 16 games and recording a career high in several categories including snaps (511) tackles...
