B/R picks three very different Saints quarterbacks as comparisons for Bo Nix

You won’t find Derek Carr, Andy Dalton, and Drew Brees mentioned in the same conversation too often, but that’s where we found ourselves here. Bleacher Report’s Derrick Klassen shared his scouting report on Oregon quarterback Bo Nix, a prospect in the 2024 NFL draft, and offered a couple of different pro comparisons for Nix: Carr, Dalton, and Brees.

Incidentally, all three of them have played for the New Orleans Saints. And that’s where this comparison falls apart. Brees of course accomplished a Pro Football Hall of Fame-worthy career in black and gold. Dalton spent a single year in New...

The New Orleans Saints announced that they have re-signed cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles to a one-year deal.

Jean-Charles was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the 5th-round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent 2 years with the Packers before moving on to the San Francisco 49ers practice squad.

In November 2023, Jean-Charles was signed to the Saints practice squad. He was later signed to the active roster on January 4th. Jean-Charles played in three games, mostly on special teams.

Details of his contract are not yet available.

Saints punter Lou Hedley has chosen a new jersey number

There isn’t a new punter kicking for the New Orleans Saints, but the one they have will be wearing a new number. Second-year pro Lou Hedley has given up his No. 39 jersey to switch to the more-appealing No. 15, per the team website. It’s a new number for him after he wore No. 94 in college at Miami.

So who will be wearing his old jersey number? Right now, that’s been assigned to rookie kicker Charlie Smyth. So the Saints’ Australian punter will be wearing No. 15 and their Irish kicker is using No. 39.

Fans should expect some competition to be brought in for Hedley, though it’s likelier...

6 Saints in the spotlight as offseason kicks off

The New Orleans Saints offseason program kicked off on Monday with players reported for voluntary workouts and weightlifting sessions, officially sliding the calendar into 2024. Everything that develops from here — the 2024 NFL draft, minicamp in May and June, training camp out in California in August, and the start of the season in September — starts with this grind at the team headquarters in Metairie in April.

Some players and coaches are feeling more pressure than others. The Saints are in a bad way amid a three-year playoff drought and the twin departures of Sean Payton and Drew Brees, longtime faces of the franchise. Few teams have spent more money and had less to show for it than the team’s ownership group led by Gayle Benson. If the Saints are going to end that streak and get where they want to go, it’ll be because some of these six people stepped up big-time:

Who was the Saints’ biggest draft bust, and why?

He was a three-time first-team All-American, a record-setter, and able to play both kicker and punter. He is the only three-time All-American punter in NCAA history and was the 11th overall pick in the 1979 draft. He is Russell Erxleben, a K/P from the University of Texas and the player I consider the biggest bust in New Orleans Saints history.

In his three years with the Longhorns - he redshirted his first year - Erxleben amassed 7,440 punting yards and made 60% of all his attempted field goals. In 1977, during a matchup against Rice University, Erxleben set the record for the longest...

Breaking down the Saints' picks in ESPN's three-round mock draft

The 2024 NFL draft is drawing closer by the day, and we have a good idea about where the New Orleans Saints will be looking to improve. That’s reflected in ESPN’s latest mock draft from Field Yates and Mel Kiper Jr., who collaborated on a three-round projection.

It’s no secret that the Saints must upgrade at offensive tackle, and that’s where ESPN has them moving first. Penn State left tackle Olumuyiwa Fashanu has been a popular pick for New Orleans at No. 14 in the first round. Here’s why Yates sees him as a good fit:

Fashanu has never played on the right side before, and Penning only...

NFL Draft Profile: Olu Fashanu

The New Orleans Saints should be looking to add some help on the edges of their offensive line with their first pick in this year’s NFL Draft. Unless one of the top prospects start sliding down the board, there’s no reason their pick at 14 shouldn’t be an offensive tackle.

Joe Alt is basically guaranteed to be gone by the time the Saints are on the clock but depending on how the early stages of the draft go, they could have their pick of the litter between the rest of the OT’s.

One of the guys the Saints will undoubtedly take a long look at is Olu Fashanu from Penn State. The 6-foot-6...

Saints find themselves in Tier 4 in this NFC hierarchy

As the New Orleans Saints prepare for the 2024 draft, NFL.com columnist Jeffri Chadiha has the Saints on the second lowest tier in the NFC. Chadiha broke the NFC hierarchy down into five tiers: Super Bowl contenders, teams with playoff potential, those with intriguing possibilities, others facing a tough road ahead, and some for whom next year can’t come fast enough.

Oddly, but appropriately enough the Super Bowl contender tier has the most teams. The Saints find themselves in the “tough road ahead” group. The difference between Tier 4 and Tier 3 is the latter is believed to have a higher...

With the 14th pick in the 2024 SB Nation writers’ mock draft, the New Orleans Saints select Offensive Tackle Troy Fautanu from Washington.

Originally from Henderson, Nev., Fantanu attended Liberty High School playing both football and volleyball; he was rated a three-star recruit by ESPN and handed a four-star grade by 247 Sports. Following high school, he committed to play at the University of Washington.

Fautanu played four seasons for the Huskies. In 2022, he had a breakout season, starting all 13 games. In Week 3, he was named the PAC-12 Offensive Lineman of the Week and was named to...
