With their backs against the wall, the Saints put together a strong performance to keep their season alive for at least one more week

By John Hendrix - Saints News Network | SI

TAMPA
-- The Saints looked like more the team that we had hoped to see all season on Sunday. While it wasn't perfect, they played a fairly complete game to beat the Bucs 23-13 in a very convincing division win. New Orleans moved to 8-8 after the win, which sets up a really interesting final week of the regular season. Here's several things we learned about the Saints from Week 17.

What We Learned From the Saints In Week 17

THE SAINTS ARE STILL ALIVE, DIVISION DOWN TO WEEK 18
New Orleans avoided being eliminated from playoff contention on Sunday by negating the Bucs from a third straight division title, which sets up an interesting Week 18. Everyone but the Panthers are still in the mix for the NFC South crown going into next weekend. Here's a brief rundown on what needs to happen for each team.

  • Bucs - Beat the Panthers
  • Saints - Beat the Falcons, Panthers beat the Bucs
  • Falcons - Beat the Saints, Panthers beat the Bucs
Now, the Wild Card is still in play, but it's going to take some help here. Saints would need to beat the Falcons and see the Seahawks lose to the Steelers and Cardinals while whoever wins out of the Packers and Vikings would need to lose in Week 18. Things could still not go in favor of the Saints, but we'll see. ...

Derek Carr could get closer to a rare feat by beating his former team

Don’t be surprised if the New Orleans Saints play the Las Vegas Raiders season opener. Neither team’s cache is particularly high, so the NFL likely won’t push them as marquee matchup. Derek Carr playing his former team is enough to schedule it as a season opener, even if it’s a 12 noon game. Carr certainly has that game circled.

Toppling his former team would be a form of revenge and also get Carr closer to a rare feat. In his decade-long career, Carr has defeated 27 of the 32 teams in the NFL. That leaves the Raiders as one of five teams the quarterback has never defeated. This will be...

As the NFL draft inches closer, you’ll be flooded with mock drafts every other day. These are interesting ways to predict how the draft may play out and who will be on the board when the New Orleans Saints pick at 14 and their subsequent picks.

NFL.com draft analyst Chad Reuter put a spin on the typical mock drafts we’ll see flying around over the next week. Reuter laid out the ideal player for each team with their first two picks. He didn’t pick a player twice and attempted to keep it realistic to what range a player may be picked. The New Orleans Saints’ first two selections are at Nos...

There aren’t many New Orleans Saints jerseys to be found in Vatican City, and one of the few you’ll see there is personalized for the Pope himself. Saints owner Gayle Benson received a personal audience with Pope Francis this week, in which she gifted him a custom No. 1 jersey emblazoned with “Papa Francesco,” as seen a photo shared by WDSU’s Fletcher Mackel.

Mackel reports that this was just one stop on Benson’s 10-day trip in Europe. She also petitioned the Papal Foundation and other business and tourism groups for investments in New Orleans and renovations to the iconic St. Louis...

NFL Network’s very own Peter Schrager just recently put out his first mock draft of the year, which includes many intriguing selections.

Schrager has the New York Giants moving up to take Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy at no. 4, the Indianapolis Colts moving up to no. 9 to select LSU receiver Malik Nabers and even the Minnesota Vikings staying put at no. 23 and taking Oregon quarterback Bo Nix in Round 1. How fascinating would these moves be? Very.

But because we cover the New Orleans Saints of course, let’s dive into Schrager's selection for the team and hear what he has to say...

The NFL Draft is just over a week away now, and a lot of prospect visits are wrapping up, so we have a bit of an idea about what positions each team is eyeing as we get closer to draft day.

The New Orleans Saints main visitors have been offensive and defensive linemen along with some pass catchers, so that should tell us where their mind’s at going into this thing, but truly, you never know what’s going to happen.

Despite that, I’m going to take a stab at trying to figure out what the Saints will do in this year’s NFL Draft.

In my last two mock drafts, I got a little cute with the...

Throughout the history of the franchise, there have been some strong first round draft picks (Reggie Bush, Marshon Lattimore, Chris Olave, Cam Jordan, etc). But there have also been misses for the New Orleans Saints.

Members of the Saints’ front office were spotted at the Illinois Pro Day, potentially taking a look at DT Johnny Newton.

In a draft cycle where New Orleans has consistently been linked with offensive linemen, this mock has the Black and Gold landing a good one.
