Saints draft: Boom or bust? Only time will tell!!

TRACEY JAGNEAUX

NEW ORLEANS -- No question that after last year’s bountiful draft for the New Orleans Saints, the 2018 version of let’s take a chance would be scrutinized in a way that no other draft would be.

No matter who the Saints chose this year, the comparison to 2017 would be made, even though none of the players selected starting last Thursday had even taken a snap in the NFL.

So, how did the Saints do in this year’s installment? That all depends on who you ask. The range of grades looks like the report card of a seventh grader going through the change to adulthood: it is all over the map.
ESPN gave the Saints a C+, putting New Orleans just above average.

Bleacher Report, without providing any explanation with its rankings, gave the Saints a D, the lowest in the league along with Oakland and Seattle.
Yahoo and USA Today agreed with Bleacher Report and also rated the New Orleans draft as being D worthy. However, both NFL.com and CBS Sports had the Saints with a grade of B.

The biggest move of the draft for New Orleans came very early. The Saints made a bold move in the first round Thursday, trading next year’s first-rounder to move up and take Texas-San Antonio defensive end Marcus Davenport, a player who filled a need for a pressure player at the right defensive end spot the Saints have been trying to fill long-term for years...

ORLANDO, Fla. — News of Kobe Bryant's death broke just before the starting lineups at the Pro Bowl were announced.

And by the end of the first quarter, most everyone on the sidelines was aware of the tragedy, including New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

Brees, in an in-game interview with ESPN's Lisa Salters, said he'd met Bryant once in the past, and wished he could have interacted with him more.

"He was a guy who I always hoped I would have the chance...

Russell Wilson asks Drew Brees to start in his place in the Pro Bowl

Russell Wilson was chosen as the NFC’s Pro Bowl starting quarterback, but he’s stepping aside today.

Wilson has asked Drew Brees to start in his place in today’s Pro Bowl.

It was a classy move from the 31-year-old Wilson toward the 41-year-old Brees. Perhaps Wilson has some inside information about Brees’s retirement plans, but more likely Wilson just wanted to make a gesture for a player he’s long admired.

“Drew means the world to me,” Wilson said on the ESPN...

Drew Brees to start at QB in 2020 Pro Bowl

According to this Tweet from Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, starting quarterback for the NFC’s Pro Bowl team, Russell Wilson has given his starting spot in today’s game to our very own Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints:

This is a kind gesture from one veteran peer to another. While speculation may lean toward the thought that Wilson is giving this spot to Brees as a “retirement gift” as Brees could be playing in his last Pro Bowl, that is merely speculation...

The Pro Bowl returns to Orlando for a fourth consecutive year, rather than a trip to beautiful Hawaii or the Super Bowl host city of Miami. It may not be scenic Honolulu or South Beach, but the NFL Pro Bowlers do get to spend some time at Disney World this year. Although the Pro Bowl had become a mess from 2014-2016, the game has rebounded a bit since 2017. It has gone from unwatchable to mildly entertaining.

For Saints quarterback Drew Brees, the decision is simple: Play for the Saints in 2020, or retire.

On Saturday, the timetable for making the decision became a bit more clear.

“I’m really waiting until football is totally done,” Brees said Saturday from the Pro Bowl, via Amie Just of NOLA.com. “Obviously being here, I’m just very much focused on my family and this opportunity to be around the guys, playing the game.

“Then, I’ll kind of lay low for a little bit, get...

Brees, while answering media questions, occasionally patted his son on the head, simultaneously paying attention to both his child and a reporter.

For Brees, that's what Pro Bowl week is all about: spending time with his wife and four children. His decision regarding his future on the football field will come later.

Man it’s the dreaded offseason. Yet there is much football to talk about. Or not. It’s a Lagniappe thread so “most” topics are fair game. Just follow the guidelines and every thing will be kool.

The Shriners Bowl was last Saturday. Think this might be the first time I haven’t either watched it live or at least recorded it to watch. Did anyone watch and maybe see someone of interest for the upcoming draft?

Court filings by the New Orleans Saints aim to keep the public from seeing hundreds of emails that show team executives helping the Archdiocese of New Orleans shape its messaging on the church’s clerical sex abuse crisis, The Associated Press reported Friday.

Within hours of the article’s publication, the Saints issued a statement defending themselves, saying the still-unreleased emails show club officials advised Archbishop Gregory Aymond — one of Saints owner...
