The New Orleans Saints signed Coby Fleener two years ago hoping he could be the next in a line of highly productive tight ends in Sean Payton's offense.

Instead, in two seasons, Fleener struggled to make an impact that matched his five-year, $36 million contract, and on Monday, the team released him, according to a league source.

Fleener in 2016 finished with 50 catches for 631 yards with three touchdowns, but much of that production came when the team was trailing late in games. In Fleener's first training camp, Payton noted that he needed time to adjust to the offense.

In 2017, Fleener had 22 catches for 295 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games before a concussion forced him onto injured reserve. He had a reduced role in the offense as the team turned more to blocking-focused tight ends Josh Hill and Michael Hoomanawanui. ...

Our NFC South roundtable resulted in New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr sweeping the predictions for ‘Division MVP’ in 2023, which is noteworthy considering the input of rival managing editors at Falcons Wire (Matt Urben), Panthers Wire (Anthony Rizzuti), and Bucs Wire (River Wells).

So why is Carr so highly regarded? Sure, the general malaise at quarterback around the division plays a part, but he has plenty of positive qualities. Here’s why all four outlets (including ours here at Saints Wire) like him the most to lead his team to the playoffs:

Pro Football Focus’s Dalton Wasserman and Jim Wyman do not believe that the New Orleans Saints will win ten or more games in the 2023 season.

Quarterback Jake Haener and running back Kendre Miller were among the rookie players who attempted to recreate their respective teams’ logos from memory.

According to reports, Reggie Bush is likely out at Fox Sports, while Mark Ingram II is rumored to be potentially taking his place.

Reggie Bush and Mark Ingram II were both Saints first round picks and standout running backs.

The former could be replaced by the latter in a prominent broadcast analyst job.

The New York Post reported Thursday that Bush is expected to be out at Fox Sports over a contract dispute.

Bush has been a member of the Fox Big Noon Kickoff college football show, which now could have Ingram replace him.

The Post indicates Fox Sports also spoke previously with Ingram about leaving the NFL but he decided to continue his second stint with the Saints last season.

Bush was a member of the Saints...

The NFL’s social media team just released a fantastic new video of a group of rookies attempting to draw their team’s logo from memory. This is something they’ve done in the past and it never fails to make us laugh, but this year might have been better than ever.

You’ll recognize some familiar faces as two brand new New Orleans Saints rookies were called upon to give their takes on the classic fleur-de-lis. Kendre Miller’s confused and disappointed face was hilarious as he realized his mistakes in what looked like a swapping of the colors.

Jake Haener called his a “rough draft” and...

Saints hope offseason moves address last season's poor showing in the red zone

The New Orleans Saints offense last season had their struggles, that’s no secret, but when looking closer there was one specific weakness: red zone offense. With Andy Dalton leading the offense, they had troubles closing the deal with touchdowns.

Just look at the numbers: the Saints’ red zone touchdowns percentage dropped from 58.93% in 2021 to 52.08% in 2022. Back in 2020, they were converting at a 71.62%. They finished 21st in the league last season, an unacceptable ranking if you expect to compete, after ranking 18th the year before and fifth-best in 2020.

A large number of their...

We sat down with the managing editors at Falcons Wire (Matt Urben), Panthers Wire (Anthony Rizzuti), and Bucs Wire (River Wells) to make our preseason picks for second-year breakout candidates in 2023, and it’s an interesting array of responses from each team. The New Orleans Saints are hoping their 2022 rookie class can build on some late-season momentum, while other teams like the Atlanta Falcons are just hoping their players can perform well enough to justify the investments made in them.

And that doesn’t even get into what’s going on with the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay...

Drew Brees and Brian Schottenheimer go way back — before Brees became the legendary New Orleans Saints quarterback and Schottenheimer was tabbed to become the Dallas Cowboys’ missing piece from Super Bowl contention, Schottenheimer was Brees’ quarterbacks coach on the then-San Diego Chargers.

Obviously a lot has changed over the decades since. Brees is happily retired and waiting on his well-earned selection for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and Schottenheimer is getting the Cowboys passing game up to speed as their new offensive coordinator. One major addition in Dallas he’s working...

The kickoff is one of the most exciting plays in football. The NFL has added rules to try to make that play safer over the years. As exciting as it is, it can also be one of the most violent plays as well, including some of the most frequent high speed collisions in the sport. There have been changes to blocking schemes, and we’ve seen spring football leagues try their own variations to make the play safe while keeping kickoffs exciting. The newest rule change might be detrimental to the excitement and the safety.

This latest rule change is the ball is spotted at the 25-yard line on fair...

The New Orleans Saints and Houston Texans aren’t just going to be highlighted with a national broadcast in their upcoming preseason game — they’re going to be the only show in town. The rest of the NFL will complete their exhibition series Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, but New Orleans and Houston aren’t going to play until Sunday.

And FOX Sports will be shining the bright lights on them at the Caesars Superdome. Kickoff is currently scheduled for 7 p.m. CT/8 p.m. ET on Sunday, Aug. 27.

But how often will the starters actually play? In last year’s third and final preseason game, the...

What is the best piece of Saints memorabilia you own?

There is no shortage of some cool New Orleans Saints merchandise out there. Through the years, I have seen starter jackets, hoodies, hats, garden flags, even custom-made items like Saints door wreaths and yard art. With the explosion of online shopping that has taken over the last few years, there are plenty of places to get your hands on the latest, greatest Saints merchandise to add to your collection.

My personal favorites, for many reasons is a helmet signed by Drew Brees in 2009 and some pieces of confetti from the NFCCG in the Superdome and Super Bowl 44. That season was so...
