EJW could you expound in “value at QB”? Are you talking specifically this draft 1st round or in general (bc I thought qb was the worst 1st rd value in general)

Kind of an ancillary question to the OP
Is there more value in 5yds on 1st and 10 or 2 yards on 3rd and 1?

That is an interesting question, no doubt.

The point of the thread is that by picking a player on the first round, we are not only getting the obvious, a player that should produce, but also the value of having a good player under contract for five years on a relative low salary.

My rule is always to invest first rounders in core players (quarterback, wide receiver, left tackle, defensive end, defensive tackle, middle linebacker and cornerback).

Other positions I consider luxury ones (including second receiver).

I am not trying to say that it should be a wide receiver or a tight end, but looking at the possibilities right now, and how both groups are going to be almost rebuilt in the next couple of season, I wanted to see if it makes more sense, if the choice is between these positions, to draft a wide receiver or a tight end.

My preference right now would be a defensive lineman.

With potentially 5 1st round QB's the value to take one for a team like us is higher at the end of the round than for a team like the Browns who "must" find their QB of the future early which I think is what Sean was alluding to. Much more pressure on them to hit than a team that has a QB in place.

It's like the Packers situation when they had Favre. Passing on a QB when NFL value suggest there is nothing harder to find than a QB - is hard to do at the end of the 1st round.

If there is one you like that falls you trade up. If one is at 27 you take him. Same for a passrusher. If one you like falls within range you trade up...if one falls at 27 you take him.

If it's neither is available and you stay put then LB seems like the next safest pick because of the output you typically get from the position. That would put LVE squarely in our sights at 27

I feel there is a weak upper level of WR's in this class after Ridley. It seems fairly deep with TE's. Ian Thomas in the 3rd wouldn't be bad.

I'm convinced a great EDGE or DT falls to 27 and if they don't another T, G or C is a safe pick with Strief retiring, Armstead and Peat having injuries and Unger aging.

Our 3 picks in the 4th and 5th round look like pretty good spots to find WR's.

True guillermo, but someone like Gesicki and maybe even Goedert would be more like WRs than TEs in our system. Now if we could only get them to re-sign for in 4 years for TE money...

Based on the OP discussion, I agree, if we were to draft a WR and TE , then 2nd round is where we need to be. I would love to see the Browns or the Colts trade up for our #27. They have the 2nd round ammo. Browns could trade there #33or#35 and #64 and we could return our #91 and #147. Or Colts trade there #36 and swap each of our 3rd and 4th round picks.

This would give us either 2nd rounders or a 2nd rounder and high 3rd rounder for a TE and WR.

Durham Smythe, TE, Notre Dame

I'd like this guy in the third or later if he falls.

Quote:
School: Notre Dame Position: Tight End Class: Senior Height: 6-5 Weight: 257 lbs Projected Draft Round: 3-6
Scouting Report:
Has a solid frame, and is a good athlete that was productive later in 2017 after missing extensive time due to an injury. Not in the best system to showcase his receiving skills as a tight end, Smythe made the most of his targets. An effective blocker, teams will be impressed with his very good overall skillset that will allow him to be used in many different offensive formations, without having to come off the field as a liability in any particular role

He mistakenly said that Fleener being cut would still amount to an $8 million cap hit.

If the Saints stay put, however, I think they might favor Goedert unless someone like Leighton Vander Esch or Harold Landry is there.
They are projecting him to fall because of character concerns, apparently even some of his teammates didn't like him. While he's no doubt talented do you think Payton will not only take a chance on him but trade up to do so?

Who is the last drafted WR we’ve missed on? Kenny Stills is the closest, but he wasn’t a miss. Just possibly a malcontent.
