Quote:
The greatest threats to free speech in America come from the state, not from activists on college campuses.

Most of the debates about free speech, however, are not actually concerned with the First Amendment’s protections. As French acknowledges—and he is among the few on the right to do so—what is actually occurring on most college campuses is a conflict between groups over the value of particular ideas, not the censorship of free expression through state power. In any society, ideological and social consensus will lead to some ideas being unacceptable to the majority and consigned to the fringe. The question is which ideas will suffer this fate. Far from portends of an apocalypse, these are conflicts that are to be expected between groups in the polity that have profound differences of opinion over moral values.

The public attention to this conflict has vastly outpaced the attention drawn to actual threats to free speech from the state, which are numerous. And it has also obscured the extent to which some conservatives, as well, are prepared to deploy public humiliation to deprive speakers of their livelihoods or bully them into submission.

“While politically correct shaming still has great power in deep-blue America, its effect in the rest of the country is to trigger a furious backlash, one characterized less by a desire for dialogue and discourse than by its own rage and scorn,” National Review’s David French recently wrote. “So we’re moving toward two Americas—one that ruthlessly (and occasionally illegally) suppresses dissenting speech and the other that is dangerously close to believing that the opposite of political correctness isn’t a fearless expression of truth but rather the fearless expression of ideas best calculated to enrage your opponents.
Yup.

While I agree with the author's main theme that "...the greatest contemporary threat to free speech comes not from antifa radicals or campus leftists, but from a president prepared to use the power and authority of government to chill or suppress controversial speech....", I also think he misses the point on the coin's flip side by focusing on public speakers on campuses.

I think the suppression of free expression on campus by students against other students is a real issue of concern. Anecdotally, my recently graduated, strongly left-of-center son has experienced and witnessed this many, many times over 4 years on his West Coast campus. This more insidious form of free speech suppression must be addressed as well or its consequences are apt to rear their ugly heads years from now when both the suppressors and supressees are in positions of power and authority.

The thing I see is that free speech for some has become personal attacks on people and their beliefs. It’s not a middle of the road disagreement. People like Coulter and Milo take pride in being extreme and bringing out hostile feelings. Yes they have the free speech, but what people are not seeing is the response to it. People get ****** and have an emotional reaction. Those two people I’ve met, after making a career of mouthing off, attacking, hate filled speech, then go and cry first amendment when people organize to ban them off campus. Look as much as I love free speech, there is a way to speak and constructively disagree, as opposed to this inciting an emotional response tlwhich is what’s lot of these people have adopted. Listen to these people and the embedddd insults and emotional shots they take at people. This isn’t promoting a dialogue. This is provoking.

It comes back to personal responsibility. You don’t want an emotional reaction to your appearances, then don’t be a ****. It’s that simple. They want all the freedom, yet none of the responsibility. It’s like our president. Provoke an emotional response then make a big scene when people don’t like what you say. Try some respect and personal decency if you want people to show it to you.

Great point, Dave. They're abusing the right of free speech to provoke with no thought about having a dialogue. They're only interested in garnering the most attention for themselves.

Similarly, the editor of Breitbart was crying the other day because advertisers are deserting their website after people started pointing out to the advertisers that their ads were being placed there (evidently most on line advertising is placed by middlemen). He said they were suppressing free speech, which of course is exactly what is NOT happening.

Refusing to advertise on a web site that features repugnant opinions is certainly not repressing free speech, but that's how little understanding people today evidently have.
