Steve Scalise returns to Congress

Politics aside, no elected official in America should be shot or killed for their party affiliation - that is simply grotesque. Good to see Scalise back on his feet, even if with crutches. It's quite a remarkable recovery. His reception in the chamber was warm and fully bi-partisan, with fellow Louisiana Rep. Cedric Richmond (D) immediately behind Scalise.

Quote:
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who was at “imminent risk of death” when he was rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound 15 weeks ago, made a dramatic return to the U.S. Capitol on Thursday.

Scalise entered the House chamber on crutches to a roar of bipartisan applause, then embraced several colleagues and delivered his first floor remarks since the June 14 shooting in Alexandria, Va.

“You have no idea how great this feels, to be back at work here in the people’s House,” the Louisiana Republican said.

He added: “I’m definitely a living example that miracles really do happen.”

Though he walked slowly across the floor, Scalise showed little sign of physical weakness, delivering more than 15 minutes of remarks — thanking God, family, friends, colleagues, doctors and the law enforcement officers who ultimately killed the shooter, 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson, before he could harm more of the Republicans who had gathered for a morning baseball practice.
. . .
The floor was packed for Scalise’s return — not only by House members, but also several senators, including Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), who was present at the baseball practice and was among the first people to reach Scalise after he was shot.

Scalise took his usual place on the Republican side of the House chamber, sitting next to Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Chief Deputy Whip Patrick T. McHenry (R-N.C.).

But sitting immediately behind him was his closest Democratic friend, Rep. Cedric L. Richmond, a fellow Louisianian who Scalise said was among the first to arrive at the scene of the shooting and then to visit him in the hospital.

“It really does show the warm side of Congress that very few people get to see,” Scalise said.

In before crazy partisan comments.

I am glad to see him get a new lease on life. As echoed thousands of times already, no elected official should be harmed while in service of his country, thats just horrible. I hope that he has learned some things while he was on the sideline, and is ready to make some great waves in Washington.

Can't even imagine the terror he and others went through--being shot at while playing a game of baseball with friends...

Happy that Steve has recovered and hoping he continues to do so. Nobody should care about party affiliation--at the end of the day he's a hero of a daddy to two children, a loving husband to a wife, a son to a proud father and mother...We can all put politics aside for this matter and agree that we are thankful for him being alive.

Glad Steve has recovered! No matter what letter is next to the elected officials name no one deserves to be harmed!!

I actually hadn't been keeping up with him. I didn't realize his recovery took so long. Glad he was able to pull through. Terrible event.
