Why Isn't Puerto Rico A State?

Seriously. It's under U.S. jurisdiction, right? They have Senators. Why isn't it a state? Is there something political that's been going on for decades?

Why Isn't Puerto Rico A State?

They don't have US Senators and have a non-voting commissioner in the House. (I think that's what it's called but I'm near certain they have no US Senators...we only have 100 with the VP ad the tie breaker.)

There have been five votes in Puerto Rico about applying to become a US State. The first four failed meaning the Puerto Ricans themselves did not want to become a State. The most recent vote, in 2012 had incredibly low turnout due to a ballot that did not offer an option to remain a Commonwealth, so many chose not to vote as a protest over the ballot.

They had a vote on this in June this year and it was overwhelmingly in favor of becoming a state. Congress would now have to approve them becoming a state... that will not happen with the current Republican controlled congress, because Puerto Rico would be a democratic state.

Simple answer. If Puerto Rico became a state,a vast majority of citizens would be on some form of public assistance. It's not a smart budgetary move no matter which
way you lean politically.

I probably already asked this, but would there be any benefits to becoming a state? Would the reaction to realif would be faster for example?

But if we go by that, shouldn't we revoke Mississippi, Arkansas, and Alabama's statehood?

Can kneel in front of that one just as easy, so what does it matter? Its about substance not style.

I wonder if any of the Chinese flag manufacturers have ever gotten the number of stars wrong. If they did and it was this subtle, I doubt anyone would really notice?

Puerto Rico would likely have 2 Democratic Senators along with 4-5 Democratic Reps (out of a projected 5 they would get based on population). No Republican would want that to happen. They give the excuse that it's in debt, but you'd have to be an idiot by now to not realize Republicans actually don't care about the deficit.

By the same token, of course Dems would want Puerto Rico to be a state. Their party would gain additional power at the federal level. There likely would need to be another state added at the same time akin to Hawaii and Alaska, with the other state leaning conservative.

But the reality is, there's no real legitimate reason why Puerto Rico isn't a state yet.
