As the stadium idea for the Saints continues to be an issue, the cost question will always be relevant. I remember just a few years ago, a $300 million figure seemed to be in the ballpark (pardon the pun).

But those figures keep going up. Sure, not everyone is going to build a $1 billion superstadium like Dallas is, but check out the cost of DC's new Nationals Park- a nice park to be sure but not really something I'd consider lavish.

The municipal portion of the $769 million is a $535 million bond.

I think we could build something competitive for $500 million, but the problem is we are going to keep having to upgrade that stadium over the years, so the final cost is going to be something a lot higher. I think Dallas is doing it right...do it big and do it once.

Wow, and that's just baseball stadium. I would think all things being equal (whatever that means in this case) a football stadium would cost at least 50% more than a baseball stadium.

Depends on how duped the taxpayers are into fitting the bill.

Perhaps, but according to that graphic, DC is actually projecting a tax windfall on the project. Oh to have a real tax base!

Well hopefully any stadium would be split up between

-Public Funding

-Benson

-NFL support

-The Sugar Bowl

I love the Superdome and besides im not sure the state should spend the money on a new stadium... but the thought of the Saints moving is enough to have me crossing my fingers that they do.

I don't think that you can compare the cost of construction material, labor, etc in those cities (Dallas, DC, etc) with that of New Orleans.

Remember the city of New Orleans is still in rebuilding mode and cost of construction is a lot higher here than in those other cities because of such a higher demand for those construction material so the cost of building a new staduim here would be a lot more expensive.

But then again so many of you all are set on building a new staduim (despite the fact that studies were actually done to suggest that re-engineered super dome could also be an option).

But I guess some of you all just want something new just to have... Go figure.

I don't think that's the majority sentiment of people on this board. I think that most of us would, all things considered, prefer to see the Superdome upgraded to better compete financially with the other stadiums in the NFL. However, the stadium issue is a real one in that the NFL and team ownership want a new stadium at some point in the near-ish future. Seeing as how 2/3 of the league either has had or is building a new staduim within the past 20 years, the Superdome is considered ancient by those standards. And with the advent of PSLs, more luxury boxes, etc. giving the league and owners more money they will use any excuse necessary to call for a new stadium.....and if a certain area/region patently refuses to build a newer stadium, well let's say that NFL teams (and this one in particular) aren't afraid to pull the "relocation" card to basically hold cities and their fans/taxbases hostage to get what they want.

All told, I believe all of us Saints fans want to see the Saints remain in New Orleans, and for that to be possible for the next 20 to 30 years a new stadium will have to be built to sate the NFL and Benson.

The cheapest alternative is still an open air natural surface facility that the Saints and Tulane can share. Been done before...

Oh no not this if you don't build a staduim or else argument again. Where has the NFL or Saints have publicly stated that a new staduim MUST be built in order for the Saints to stay in New Orleans?

However, Benson as well as the NFL did came out publicly and stated more support is needed from the gulf south region to help the Saints stay economically viable in this market. This was back in 2001...I believe, which is why the state and saints have this current payment incentive contract in place to keep the Saints here, which was created under Gov. Mike Foster at the time.

However, a major part of the problem with the Saints was that they had a bad team on the field most of the time. After, constant losing and going thru so many bad head coaches, QBs, and bad players in general many of the fans got fed up and stopped going to the games. Until 2006, for the most part the Saints have been consistently medicore at best.

You can only shovel bad to medicore down people's throats for so long.

That's how you can attract people to the games by fielding good teams that are capable of becoming a contender and to be consistent at winning. That's how the Saints can stay viable.

I support a complete re-engineer or renovation of the super dome. Besides the dome with its size is capable of an having upgrade unlike some of the older facilities in the NFL where there's no other option but to build a new staduim.

As much as building materials are on the Gulf still, I find it very hard to believe that we'll be able to build something better than the Superdome for less that $700 - $800 million. We're talking the cost of the stadium here and not the purchase of the land, development of the surrounding land, infrastructure, etc. When all is said and done, we're talking $1 billion easy depending on the location.

The cost of DC's ballpark was increased due to the expedited time line. They wanted it built quickly, they were still designing parts of the stadium while the stadium was already under construction.

Why do somany people want a new stadium? What do people dislike about the current one?

New Orleans spent tens of millions of dollars on the Superdome after Katrina. Fixing the roof, replacing all the destroyed luxery boxes, vandilism, cleaing out all the trash, maybe a little bloodstains here or there, getting out all the feces and urine, and fixing water damage, it would suprise me if they decided to get a new stadium in the next couple of years since they spent so much on the current Superdome.

What don't you guys like about it?

I love the Superdome, but if its concourses were like Reliant Stadium, then it would be awesome. I want a bigger Superdome built, actually. Same look, just bigger.

They don't like that it's old and not as shiny...
