Last season I payed close attention to Usama Young during the home games.....he didn't get alot of action until he was able to come in on a few plays when JD was injured...I started paying attention to his play because of all the reports coming from the saints camp about how athletic he was...every time he was in he was on top of the play....the kid is fast, athletic and has good football instincts....the first game he went in I saw him come close to making an interception two times...

Just because he couldnt make a big impact because of all the veterans that were in front of him doesnt mean this kid isnt going to be a factor this year....for some reason everyone on SR thinks that b/c he wasn't starting that there is something wrong w/ him and some of you are completely discounting him for next years season.....does anyone here remember PT???? we all knew it was obvious how good he was during the season and the coaches didnt put him in because of a few veterans that were in front of him.....I'm pretty sure that same mentality can be credited to the lack of Usama Young playing time last year....give the kid a chance I saw alot of good stuff coming from him last year when he was a rookie when he was only given a handful of opportunities....he gives are CB situation alot more depth than everyone is alluding to....

I know what you are saying but you can't rely on a player that hasn't really seen NFL action to fix the worst secondary in the NFL. Address the position and if Usama can make some plays then it is a bonus.

It might just be me, but I think most people on this board have the same sentiments as you. We all see alot of promise in him.

CBs take a while to adjust to the NFL, unlike RBs. I'm intrigued by Usama, but don't expect him to have a monster year just yet. He's only in his 2nd year and was a 3rd round pick, coming from a small school and wasn't even invited to the combine, so we don't really know much about him. At least DRC, another small-school CB, is a 1st-rounder with lots of footage on him.

I haven't seen any "hate" for him. He's got the talent, but needs seasoning. Most people think he'll be good in time, but isn't quite ready to step into a starting job.

He has to somehow earn a shot. The staff is going to play McKenzie (if healthy), Gay and David. PT wouldn't have got a shot without all the injuries.

But alot of people thin DRC will be our savior at CB. :hihi:

He got owned in the Eagles game, I watched (only) him on a number of plays get beat on a number of different routes, a few big gains over the middle come to mind. I think he will be good very soon tho.

Usama will only get better. Being a CB in the league is probably one of the toughest task on defense. There is no possible way any CB will be any good without a decent pass rush up front.

I saw the same thing. Once McKenzie went down, the Eagles picked on Craft and Young all game. It proved to me that neither should have been starting over Jason David.

I, for one, don't see any hate for Usama Young on this board. I think he was a project when they drafted him and was not ready so see a lot of action last year. It would be nice if he can make an impact this season, but I would withhold judgement on him until year three.

I don't see a lot of "hate" towards Young on this board at all. If anything, I think there is more love towards him than most of the other players. We all know that David didn't perform and everyone was calling for Young to be allowed on the field to replace him...I certainly don't see that as "hate."

I think Young will do wonders this year. He's had a full year in the system, been able to learn from MM and now is going to have Gay in TC to show him the ropes too. While I don't see him starting if MM comes into the season healthy, he can grow as he should....start at the dime, work into the nickel and THEN...compete for a #1 or 2 spot. He was a third round pick and not a first like DRC is expected to be. I think trying to make the comparison between the two is just wrong. DRC has not stepped foot into an NFL game, so we have no idea exactly how he is going to be. Young has been on the field a few times and while he wasn't spectacular, his ratio of making plays to getting burned is NO WHERE near what David's is.

Let's give the kid a chance and see how things shake out in TC. Oh BTW...I've exchanged emails with him on Myspace a time or two and have to say he is definitely loving the city and one of the most polite players I've come across. He knows he has a lot to learn and is committed to making a difference on this team....a REAL team player!

............because he's old news....people cant stick to who they like...everybody in the beginning agreed that he and david jones were the future at corner last year...now its a new offseason, meaning new hopes...meaning new players to pin your hopes on....to me he is still gonna be a solid player for us...i'm looking forward to him playing next year, he's fast, strong, aggresive, played the run well, I saw no indication last year that he was neither a work in progress or a waste of a 3rd rounder.

that was his most extensive playing time all year....yeah Id go after him to if I were Andy Reid....it was late in the season and a rookie corner goes in the game who most time has been on special teams....thats a no brainer, go after the kid....I dont think any rookie corner would of faired much better after only seeing special teams for the first half of the season...when he played dime or nickle agaist the Hawks, he played well, almost came out with a pick, but then he injured his shoulder...but that Eagles game was just them getting the best of the defense because they had to play a corner who hasnt seen alot of game action, atleast not against #1 or #2 recievers.

I agree, it seems that any CB on the Saints not named Mike McKenzie is a bum to most on this board. I think that UY has a chance to become a good CB, but we have to wait and see. What people don't seem to realize is that it is VERY unlikely that a rookie CB is going to come in and solve any problems in the first year. It's a rare talent that does that, and usually they come in with everyone salivating about him. Other than that, it's a roll of the dice.

Also, let's not forget that we had a terrible pass rush last year. If you give QBs and WRs time, they will beat any CB, even the great Champ Bailey had problems last year when the Denver rush was struggling.
