I have started to see this come up in threads recently and even on a random mock draft here and there and it makes no sense to me. We have a solid line, they may not be the best run blockers but they are adequate, as well as some young guys that are waiting in the wings. We dont have a glaring need along the Oline and I would be really disappointed if we take any offensive lineman, but especially a guard with our pick. And yes I know Clady is good but we really don't need him either.

Our defense is where our problems are, whether its a linebacker, corner, D tackle, or safety if we are gonna stay at 10 we need to draft defense. Even if we have to reach a little for a defensive player when there is a higher rated offensive player on the board we need to do it. We are in dire need of athletic playmakers on defense, without it we are not much better off than we were last year. Vilma is probably the only guy we can count on to improve our defense this year, and even he is coming off an injury that makes him somewhat questionable. Gay might be a small improvement over our current corners but not much, Morgan is not someone we should count on, though if healthy he could be a solid player. We need to add some young talent to that group.

To take it a step further giving up a pick to take a player would also be a mistake. Dont get me wrong I would love to have Dorsey or Ellis on this team but neither guy is gonna save our defense. If one of em falls to 10 great, pull the trigger, get a linebacker or corner with the 2nd and then do whatever you want with the 3rd, otherwise do everything you can to trade back and hope someone falls in love with a player sitting at 10. The Saints desperately need to get at least 2 defensive playmakers in the first 2 rounds, and if we could get 3 we have a chance to be a top 10 D. With an offensive player in the first our O would be the same (top 5 or 6) and our D might be around 25th. Trade up for Dorsey/Ellis and our O is still top 5 or 6 but our D is probably 20ish. Get a defensive playmaker in the beginning of 1 and 2 and you still have no change in your offense but now your defense could be top 15, manage to pull out 3 defensive starters or at least solid contributors and who knows we might end up with a top ten Defense to go along with our top ten offense.

I know all of that is contingent on the FO getting the picks right but there are definitely 3 guys in the top 50 picks that could come in and start on our Defense. Say for example you trade back with Philli and get Lito, take Laws, Mayo or Conner at 19 and then a guy like Kenny Phillips with the 2nd. All of those players could start for us along with Vilma at MLB, and Usama possibly as your nickel (or Gay) and suddenly your D is fortified and the Offense doesnt have to score 40 to win a game. Plus if Meachem shows up and Reggie puts it all together you have your new and improved offense as well.

Thats my hope for the way things go and why I dont want us to take any offensive player with the 10th pick. Let the bashing commence

There is nothing wrong with Brandon Albert being our pick, he's smart strong and quick at his position, and he can also play Tackle.
I have him in my mock for us, but we pick him after DRC, McKelvin, and Rivers are gone, and he is easily the best pick then.
All great running teams seem to have one thing in common and that is that they all have a really good LG, LT, and C which is something that we lack, and I would love to see Reggie to play behind a Saints OLine that can run block well for him. It may not be a dream pick, but Albert is a much better choice than Clady would be for our team, and we don't have to reach for defense if nothing good is available, Albert is going to be an amazing guard.

Ok, here's my belief: When in doubt, look to the tranches. You can never have too many good linemen and that's where the battles are fought on every play. No team is stacked all along the lines, us included. We have needs at DT, RT and we could even fill another spot at OG, opposite Evans. However, a guard at 10 is probably too high, but Branden Albert is no ordinary guard: at 6'7, he's more suited to play OT. That being said, I've been saying for a while that Jeff Otah would make a lot of sense at 10. He's a big, mauling RT who would open up gaping holes in the running game. Reggie would have a field day running behind him. Face it: Stinch sucks and if Strief was going to overtake him, he would have done it last year. Ditch Stinch and keep Strief in for relief duty, draft Otah. If DRC is gone, as well as the usual suspects that will go long before we pick, Otah would be my choice.

Not to thread jack, but do you really wanna throw all that money at a kid who had about average stats in a weak college division? I mean yeah he owned the senior bowl, and his work outs were really good, but theres a DRC clone that will be avaliable in the third in the form of Molden.

I think the underlying theme here is that after Dorsey/Ellis, there isn't a defensive player in this draft who is a definite day one starter. Clady or Albert would both be. If there was a guy we all felt would come in and beat out Shanle, Morgan (healthy), Harper, Bullocks, Gay, David, Young, or Craft, then this board would have agreed on the pick. This isn't even near the case. But we can all agree that Clady (over Stinch) and Albert (over Nesbit) would. That is what you should get out a top ten pick. A day one starter. That said, a better running game does help our D tremendously.

i can't believe i read all that. word for word. But i'm bored and agree. I will base a winning or losing season on what our 1st round pick is. Mkelvin, DRC, Rivers, Ellis, Lito trade would be good. Anything else is a failure to me. BTW, DRC is good.

Boredom! That must be the reason for some of the craziness on the boards lately.

I think that the Saints will take the best player available.......

...as long as the BPA is a DT, LB or CB. :D J/K

/selfIndictment.

Strange. I have decided to base a winning or losing season on how many wins or losses our team has next year. I don't care if they draft a Kicker if we win the Superbowl next year. :hihi:

lol I guess that would have been a more succinct way to say it, you have a way with words Andrus.

Fish321. finally someone on this board that make sense. i totally agree with you on the trade back get an extra pick especially seeing how we have no 4th. And definitely no O-Line pick with the 10 our line is one of the better o-lines in the league. why would we want to invest another high priced rookie contracts into it.

definitely D with the first three picks of the draft, DT + LB + CB i don't care which order or what what we do as long as we add depth at those positions.

anything else is just plain idiocracy!

I'd rather have Albert than Rivers or Mendenhall.

If we can get an elite guard to go along side Brown, I would be happy. If you can pair an elite guard and tackle on the same side you can run behind them all day. Thats what Minny does.
