Five reasons to vote for/against McCain (1 Viewer)

This is a request of McCain supporters to supply five reasons Americans should vote for your candidate. I will do this for each of the three remaining major party candidates. If you can't bring yourself to write reasons to vote for a candidate, maybe you can give your reasons NOT to vote for a candidate. If this works well, I'd like to revisit the threads after the nominees are official for the final two.

Reasons to vote for McCain:

He's not a Clinton
He's not a far left winger
He's for finishing our responsiblties to Iraq
He's not "wishy washy"
He understand the ability and limitation of the US Military

Reason's not to:

I don't have believe he will curb government spending as much as i'd like (but in his defense there is only so much a president can do in that regard)
He was brought kicking and screaming to securing the boarder (though he seems to have learned where people stand on this)
Shown to much willingness to compromise core conservative values
No real expirence as in the government executive branch at any level
Can put his agenda before that of other party leaders

Reasons NOT to vote for McCain.

1} McCain's conception of the Middle East is identical to George Bush's, which is the nonconservative nation building babble that distracts from the real issues. Nothing will change.

2) McCain is as weak on economics as George Bush was on foreign affairs and lacks the requisite judgement necessary for what may be our most challenging economic period since the Great Depression.

3) On the broader issue of foreign policy in general, he embodies all the knee jerk interventionist tendencies that got us into the current mess in the first place.

4) He is a hot head who can lose his cool and act impetuously

5) He will take office at 71 years of age, oldest president entering office ever.

I think McCain and the Democrats are making a bad political move on the War.

I mentioned many times about Leaving and Staying are the same thing because both sides want to achieve the same goal. I think All Three canidates are misleading people.

i saw today on the news highlights of McCain's economic plan to double dependent deduction amouts, eliminate the AMT, end earmarks, use a veto on spending, and review the budgets of ALL government agencies.

I was impressed by what i heard.

The number 1 reason to vote for him and this is really the only reason anybody should need.
1. He understands that to achieve peace you must prepare for War.

Also, we need our troops back home. We keep on using National Guard troops and there is not enough troops here just in case of invasion. Of course, if that happens then we just go ballistic on who invades. Back to topic, McCain would keep a large enough contingent in Iraq that just enough troops die each month to help his fantasy that terrorists are still there.

1. Continuation of Bush and neocon foreign policy.

2. Social conservatism.

3. No meaningful healthcare plan.

4. Surrounds himself with lobbyists.

5. Demeanor. (5 probably being replaced by a poor VP selection)


For:

1. Not opposed to protecting the environment.

2. Less Republican than your average Republican (better 8 years ago).

3. Despite surrounding himself with lobbyists he has supported some ethics reforms.

4. More honest and direct than a typical candidate.

5. Limbaugh, Coulter, and Hannity hated him.

Uhhh...we prepared for war for 50 years, spending $15 trillion dollars, establishing over 700 military installations around the globe, a 500+ ship navy, 30,000 nuclear warheads, $30-$50 billion annual expenditure on intel, etc.

And that did not lead to peace.

big reasons not to vote for McCain

1. Fundamental misunderstanding of foreign policy. McCain believes that keeping US troops stationed in Iraq for the next 100 years is a good idea and will make America safer. It will actually be the number one tool terrorists use for recruiting more "martyrs", to stop the foreign occupation of Muslims lands.

2. Fundamental misunderstanding of the economy. Although McCain originally opposed the Bush tax cuts, he now supports them. He has gone on record saying he believes in the supply-sider's philosophy that cutting taxes = increased government revenue. This is exactly the thinking that has wrecked our economy. Its this logic that allows Republicans to cut taxes while simultaneously increasing spending, a terribly irresponsible fiscal policy.

3. He believes it is ok to for the US government to imprison even its own citizens as enemy combatants, circumventing the rights of due process which are guaranteed to us by the US Constitution.

other reasons:

*Increased pandering- McCain is one of the more honest and straight forward politicians out there. At least he used to be. During this Presidential run he has gotten away from his straight talk, and more and more he is making empty emotional appeals instead of dealing with actual substance. Especially when it comes to the war. Circumventing substantive debate and hiding flawed policy behind a smokescreen of "supporting the troops" and "honor" is a played-out trick and very poor form.

*flip flop on abortion- McCain is pro life. A few years ago, he told a San Francisco newspaper that although he is morally opposed to abortion, he would not support overturning Roe v Wade because it would force women to have illegal abortions. Now he supports overturning Roe v Wade

*voted to give tax cuts for companies that ship jobs overseas

* wants to increase use of the death penalty, also increase federal spending to build more prisons

* wants to increase federal spending for the war on drugs and impose stricter sentencing on people convicted of drug related offenses

* believes we should overthrow "rogue" governments to keep America safe. Believes we should maintain Cuban embargo and having no diplomatic relations with the country.

I'll add another reason: McCain has flip-flopped on foreign polciy since he started hanging with neocons.

In 1983 McCain had the following to say about our intervention in Lebanon:

The fundamental question is "What is the United States' interest in Lebanon? It is said we are there to keep the peace. I ask, what peace? It is said we are there to aid the government. I ask, what government? It is said we are there to stabilize the region. I ask, how can the US presence stabilize the region?...

The longer we stay in Lebanon, the harder it will be for us to leave. We will be trapped by the case we make for having our troops there in the first place.

What can we expect if we withdraw from Lebanon? The same as will happen if we stay. I acknowledge that the level of fighting will increase if we leave. I regretfully acknowledge that many innocent civilians will be hurt. But I firmly believe this will happen in any event.

Is there any chance that those could be his feelings toward Iraq as well however he's just saying the complete opposite to get elected?

I'm sure it's not but I have wondered if McCain is really as strongly behind this war as he acts like he is.
