I know it's been a hot topic on the board but I did a search and didn't see a thread exclusively addressing the question so I made one.

It's a good question though. The guy has been a pretty solid player overall but how good is he going be worth in next three years? He's a tough guy who is going to be a starting DE for somebody. Even though he had a bit of an off year I thought he played his *** off. He really is a beast and when he's on the field he's one of the baddest dudes ot there. He should be comming into his prime and some body is going to be paying him a buncha money.

Should we be that team? What kind of contract would you offer him? What is he going to want?

What would a team like the Dolphins or the Giants be willing give for him? What would you take for him? Do you force him to play out his contract? I don't think they want to let it come to that, but if we can't sign him do we let him walk?

Personaly, I hope we can keep him and think that the "Team" either works it out or get's good value for him in a trade. Remember that what sounds like a huge contract now won't look so big in two years

I think NYG are pretty set at DE, even if Strahan retires. I would like to keep Smith, and think he might come cheaper now than if he blows up this year and we try and sign him next. I am not against trading him if we get good value for the trade. I would rather loose him than colston or Evans and think he would probably pull a bigger trade value than them anyway.

if you trade Will Smith, then you have to spend a high draft pick to replace him. Not going to happen.

^ ^ Yeah but if he's asking for too much money you have to draw the line and be prepared to make something positive happen. You have to give him at least what you gave Grant plus some. If he's looking for a much bigger deal you risk blowing your whole salary structure by over paying.

I agree that trading Smith defeats the purpose of a trade for Dorsey or Ellis.
We are trading a lot to a high draft pick, making DE a major need in the process.
More major needs = bad. What's even worse is not having a first rounder to fill a major need.

Also a move for Dorsey would be to improve our DL by a large amount, but then take away the play of Smith, the best player on the DL, and Dorsey's impact is lesser.

Being a GM must be a headache

So we either have to keep Smith or keep next years first. I am totally against using both in the same deal. I can just imagine trading Smith, getting Dorsey, having a bad DE situation for a year, then getting Tyson Jackson next year.
Beastly DL but the boards would explode during both drafts.

Couldn't agree more Zorro. You don't create holes to fill other holes. McCray isn't an every down player. He's a pass rusher who is very bad against the run. Smith is widely regarded as our best defender. We made a mistake with the Charles Grant contract and it's going to hurt, but I'd cut bait on him way before I'd give up Will Smith.

Will Smith would be very hard to replace. If we were going to upgrade at DE it would of been Charles Grant to go.

How do you know he isnt an every down player

A hybrid type DE/LB, freakish athlete

umm, who is Vernon Gholston, Alex?

And pay him the same amount of money that you would have to pay Smith. At least we know Smith can play at a high level in the NFL.

Bingo. Think of it this way: Trading away Will Smith to move up and draft Gholston is just like taking your first round pick and flushing it down the toilet.

And if you *don't* use a high pick to replace him, you've just dumped perhaps the best overall player on your defense and done nothing to mitigate the loss.

+1 to giving the wrong DE the big contract. Will needs to trim up a bit, his lack of burst was very noticeable last year. Id start McCray opposite Will, and have Charles Pell Grant as a situational DE/DT.

mike mckenzie is the best player on the defense (or at least he was before the injury).

Will Smith is going to be here at least 2 more seasons. He will play out his contract this year and get the franchise tag next year if the F.O. can't get the deal they want.

Not true. McCray could blow up. Justin Tuck was a 3rd round pick. We can get a starter in the 2nd day. It can be done.
