we traded back into the first round this year?? Lets say we stay at #10 and take the best player available (probably Rivers). Then at around 20, DRC or McKelvin miraculously still on the board, would you be willing to part ways with this years #2 and next years #1? I think it would be an excellent move since I expect a late 20ish pick next year. What are your thoughts???

It is a risk but yeah i would. If we assume we do well then what is the harm it is a high first round pick. Look at the Meachem pick. I think it was a good pick but he didnt start or play at all last year. So it was like not even using it. I find that most, as well as myself, want a starter on day 1 (players in the first round). I think we failed at that last year. Young and Meachem in regards of impact on the first year. Guys like Dorsey Patrick Willis and Reggie bush are impact guys that were/are top 15 picks. We have #10 but if we assume we go 8-8 it will be mid first round. If we are playoff bound it is high first.

I think we are playoff bound if we get Dorsey/Ellis and get an LB/CB in the 2nd. Remember a good turnover defense will put us in great field position like michael Lewis did in 2001 and 2002 with his kick and punt returns. A short field managed by Brees will be a defense nightmare.

I say it is worth the risk.

No, I'm not a fan on trading away our future picks. This year's draft class isn't THAT good, IMHO. Are the players we would trade for going to start and make an impact from day one? I'm skeptical.

Those guys have been listed as possibly the top 2 CB's in the draft. If those guys drop to the 20's then we can most likely still get a quality CB with our 2nd rounder. There are several good ones this year (DRC, McKelvin, Talib, Jenkins, Flowers).

Just because the Saints inquired about moving up that high doesnt mean it will happen. I'm sure every team does that? If we were one player away then it might be a possibility but we arent and will never be a team that can invest multiple 1's into one player. Lets return to reality and hope that we are able to move up to #7 for Ellis. Teams that can risk like the NE's of the world never do that and instead look to trade down. Must be something to it.

We are 1 beastly D-lineman away from being much better on Defense.

Grant,Dorsey,Thomas,Smith

or

Grant,Ellis,Thomas,Smith

The addition of Dorsey or Ellis would give RB's heartburn, and QB's the blues.

yeah, I would do it cause it would also free up the money were going to needs to pay Colston. Personally I'd always try to trade out of the 1st round. Half your payroll going to one guy isn't good business but that just my humble opinion.

Hell no. If Drew Brees gets injured and we win 4 or 6 games (we're picking 10th overall when Brees was healthy the whole year) we'll have given up a top 10 pick and there will be an abundance of talent in the 09 draft. Especially to trade back up into round 1 for a corner. Cornerbacks are notoriously slow to adapt to the pro game. The best recent corner to come out of the draft was Antonio Cromartie who had little impact his rookie season. Malcolm Jenkins would likely have been the #1 corner had he declared. He'll be coming out next year along with James Laurinaitis and Rey Maualuga to boot. I would be horrified if we dealt next years 1st to get back into the 1st round in 08 to take a corner who would have little impact his rookie year

No- I would not trade next year's first for anyone. It should be off limits. You never know who we'll need next year, but you can be sure it'll be someone.

If I'm trading away next year's 1st, it's for Glenn Dorsey. We have two options, either of which I'm fine with: we can get a good player at 10 and keep the rest of our picks, or we can trade up with #10 and next year's 1st and go after one of the potentially dominant players in the draft. There's also the option of trading back and garnering more picks, but I'm frankly tired of that thinking. I get the idea, more picks = more chance to find a good player, but if you've identified a player that just plain fits in every way AND fills a huge need, make it happen. Our offense is close to being set, we just need a playmaker or two on defense, and we've already added one in Vilma, possibly two depending on McCray's pass rushing contributions. Ideally we'd still have #40 to either trade back or pick up a really good CB/TE/LB, so we'd still have the opportunity for another really good player behind Dorsey.

And saying all of that, I realize that there's probably about a 2% chance of us actually trading up for Dorsey and this is all talk. But it's quickly become my favorite option, and I'm not an LSU fan. If we draft with the fear that we'll be bad next year, we probably will be. It's time to make something happen.
