Post about Mike D and statement about Mike McKenzie (1 Viewer)

Thanks for the stats.
It's not like the opportunities have not been there.

There have been a good many of almost or dropped INT's (one in the endzone against Baltimore and if I recall we had 2 drops on Mike Vick in the Atlanta game). On a side note (if my numbers are right) we have recovered more fumbles on defense (5) than we have INT's.

Mike D's predictions are no better than anyone elses on this board.

mike mckenzie is a great run stopping db! unfortunately he can defend the pass at all. he's gone next year if you ask me. i'm tired of watching him get burned every game.

Huh? Hes practically shut his side down all year. Sunday a grand total of 2 passes were completed on his side of the field. Thats about his average the whole year.

He gives up 3 long passes (while being on the guy like white on rice I might add...he has not been "burnt" all year.) and suddenly he can't defend the pass?

Meanwhile Freddy "15 tackles a game because i give up that many passes" Thomas gets a pass.

I would really like to see a young up and coming vet brought in and maybe a high draft pick as well. The corner situation needs to be addressed. I think safety will be fine with Bullocks and Harper for the future.

I pray every night that we can land Clement at the end of the year. Hes the missing piece in that secondary. Then we could move Thomas to the Nickel where he belongs.

And dont forget we show Craft the door with MM.

McKenzie and Thomas both need to be replaced. If we had to get rid of one of them though, Thomas would be seeing the door if I was making the decision.

In a perfect world yeah...But I don't think we can land 2 corners better then Mckenzie. I'm hoping we can get a new #1 like Clement and let Mckenzie slide into covering #2 recievers where I think he can flourish against slightly lesser talent. Thomas at the nickel sounds good to.

That would be how I see it working out.

It seems like too many opinions about football players are extremes. A player is either "garbage" or "a beast." There is a middle ground and that is where I think McKenzie falls. He's good in coverage and good coming up in run support. He gets burned too much, but all good NFL corners get burned too much. Only the elite cover corners like Champ Bailey almost never get burned.

McKenzie isn't garbage and he isn't a beast. He's a good corner, with a bad attitude who gets paid at close to elite CB level. All added together it means he is probably gone next year. We just need to find a corner that plays as good as him for less money or one that plays better for the same or more money. He won't be easy to replace, but given his likely salary demands and attitude, it's probably a necessary move next year.

Answers to your Questions from Mike Detillier

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This guy has got to be one of the sharpest people to emerge from down the bayou (Mathews i think) He has so many football connections, is a great speaker and is fun to listen to. I did tell him how much everyone here enjoys his column and he said he hasn't received any questions in a while that's why he hasn't been as active here lately. I don't even know where to start he covered everything from Haslett years to present. I'll try tho (sorry mods this might get long)
1) Devery Henderson: He is 100% and has been for sometime. Payton is making him play his way back to the #3 spot. He is also a nervous wreck on the field, something he has been since LSU. I didn't know that and it suprised me.

2) Michael Lewis: will probably be activated and Mike thinks they will take Lance Moore off the roster. Probably special teams to start. He also said Mike has a burning desire to prove himself at wide receiver, something Haslett never gave him a chance to do.

3) Charles Grant: Said he was a great locker room guy and team leader, holds people accountable. Said Charles will be looking for top 5 DE money this offseason, and thinks Mickey will have his hands full with this one. Mike also implied that teams are already throwing money at him behind closed doors so we shall see.

4) Reggie Bush: Said he's a great kid and fun to watch in practice, works hard and is tougher than many people think. Compared him to Marshall Faulk. Said he is faster and is a better receiver, also said Marshall runs better between the tackles. (ya think?)

5) Jon Stinchcomb: Mike personally apologized to Jon about all the stuff he wrote about him in his column. Said Jon told him he would have written the same thing about himself. Also Jon said, "I'm healthy now and all i needed was a chance, and that's what coach payton gave me"

6)Mike Mckenzie: Mike said he is one of the guys payton wanted off the roster but couldn't get him off for reasons he did not elaborate on. Also said there's a good chance he will be gone in the offseason. On this note, it looks like we will be drafting a corner early next year because Payton told Mike, "you win in this league with good cornerback play" Also said Fred Thomas was a nice suprise but will be 34 soon.

7) Joe Horn: This may be Joe's last season as Mike said he may be beaten out by Father Time.

8) Special Teams: Reggie and Michael lewis will never be returning kicks together. Or reggie EVER. Said you have to be a NUT to play special teams in this league and you never know what 280 lb "nut" would try to take reggie's head off. Said punt return is different cuz you can fair catch plus the guys runnin at you are smaller 180-200 lbs instead of 280.

That's the gist of it if i think of any more i'll let you know. He is a great guy, seems like he knows EVERYONE in the NFL, which i can't seem to figure out but he does a great job and knows his football plus all the insider info. Peace out, Happy Halloween! Y'all be careful this weekend and hopefully no DWI's and an injury free stomp of the #3 bird victim ravens. SEE YOU AT THE DOME!

There is nothing that can be done now. The needs at corner are no greater than TE, DT and MLB. However, our record speaks for itself. Please keep in mind that our coaching has been great, our attitude great and our effort the same. My point, I want to enjoy the ride. Perhaps MM will catch on fire from the better coaching and positives that abound. JMO--O MAN--Go Saints

Mckenzie is an average corner but he's not garbage. The problem is he gets paid top corner money and because of that his mistakes stand out more than the rest. I've been seeing Fred Thomas get beat more often than McKenzie this year yet he doesn't catch as much heat.

Exactly.... With the money he is getting paid, no one should have to question if he is doing his job or not. Next year that money could be used to get a real lock down CB like Clement.

I was one not in favor of picking MM up, but he's not that bad. We could do a lot worse. Kinda expensive, but that is a tough position to fill via the draft (hit or miss) or free agency (flippin' expensive and usually overpay).

I think Fred Thomas is our best CB. MM is always getting burnt or getting pass interferance.
