Ignoring widespread condemnation, Iran awarded the top prize in a Holocaust cartoon contest to a Moroccan artist for his depiction of Israel's security wall with a picture of the Auschwitz concentration camp on it.
The Tehran daily Hamshahri, a co-sponsor of the exhibition, said it wanted to test the West's tolerance for drawings about the Holocaust. The entries on display came from nations including United States, Indonesia and Turkey.

So they want to test our tolerance for bad taste cartoons? Funny thing, although I think the cartoon is in poor taste I have no great urge to riot, march in the streets, burn effigies, self immolate or do anything else.

Its kind of ho hum stuff for me, Islamic fundamentalist morons making light of genocide. I expect these guys to do moronic stuff.

So now that my tolerance has been tested, how did I do?

Is this maybe cause you didn't see the cartoon?

Couldn't help buty notice that the story didn't print the cartoon.

Can't find it yet on any other mainstream site.

Kinda makes their point about taboos. Breaking taboos in the name of free speech is good if it p.o.'s muslims but bad if it offends others?

I kinda doubt you would riot at any rate, but seems a but hypocritical to not at least show the cartoon in conjunction with the story.

Anybody got link to it?

Here it is....

?

Uhhh, no, I dont think so. I read a description of the cartoon. I see offensive cartoons all the time, including avatars mocking jesus christ. Some offend me, some dont.

None of them give me an urge to riot, kidnap muslims, immolate myself or burn effigies of Muslim leaders. They are pretty much out of mind once I turn the page.

I think the west has much more tolerance for cartoons in bad taste and free speech issues in general. You dont?

In general, of course, yes.

But there're towns in the Bible belt where I'd like to see you put up a blasphemous picture of Jesus. There most likely won't be a riot, but you better watch your back.

I wouldnt argue with that.

I still dont think its particularly comparable to the thinskin (over)reaction the fundamental muslim world has to the silliest things. Its like when the pope said something apparently insensitive about Muslim history and there was this massive outrage from Indonesia to Somalia with marches and demonstrations and embassy attacks.

I think whats funny is Iran reacted with this laughable contest designed to provoke the west and they dont get it. We dont really care about tasteless cartoons, at least not to the degeee that millions will march.

I think that the guy plagiarized the red x and should be stripped of his award.

They must have pulled the pic. It was working fine earlier today.

I think you're mostly right but I just thought it was kinda interesting that the big news outlets didn't show it. Had to track it down on blogs.

Seems like we have some sacred cows too.

Are you Jewish?

I wish more was made of how there aren't any riots in Israel or anywhere else over these cartoons. One of the things that need to be hammered home is how we expect people to react to things they don't like... statements expressing disgust or disappointment are fine... riots in the street and violence in general is not.

Why do you ask? Did a lot of American jews get all wound up over this idiotic cartoon contest and stage marches and riots around the country that I missed?

The point of my post is that when some Danish cartoonist made a cartoon which was in poor taste and insulte some muslims, there was a ridiculous over reaction in parts of the muslim world. People actually died in riots around the world proptesting the cartoons.

So Iran counters by having a contest making light of the holocaust to "test" the tolerance of the west to cartoons in poor taste. So far as I know the "west' paid little attention to this moronic contest.

So what does me being Jewish or not have to do with anything? I think most rational people, jewish or not, are offended by the cartoon. I think most rational people, jews included, arent going to go riot because some idiot drew a tasteless cartoon.

IMO- this is an attempt to slap the "west" in the face, they are mistakenly under the impression that the rest of the world lives with the same ME ME ME tunnel vision they follow. The key is most rational people, which extremist are not.
