I was cleaning up some older files (so I can archive all of this season's games) and came across a peculiar problem with my video folder. For some reason Windows 7 will not allow me to change any of the files. It says I need administrator permissions to do so. Thing is, I am the administrator. I only have one user account. Any ideas? There's a lock graphic on the icon, as well.

It's probably the link to the legacy (Documents and Settings) folder structure. In Explorer, try clicking Libraries (on the left) and then Videos underneath that.

Here's how I had it set up. I keep all my files in a D: partition in a folder organized like a My Documents folder. Than way when I do a clean/new install I can just direct the real My Documents folder to be located on that second partition. For some reason the My Videos folder is now read only, and will not allow me to change the setting without giving administrator permissions. I'm trying to do this from Explorer.

So I've removed the folder assignment from My Documents altogether. Explorer now shows my entire physical documents folder in my "storage" partition as read only and will now let me change it. The weird part is that I can delete and edit any of my other folders within the "read only" documents folder, just not the videos folder.

Try going to Start -> Programs -> Accessories, right-click the command prompt, Run As Administrator.

Go to D: and type attrib -R *.* /S /D

Without posting the entire print out, here's a very much shortened version so you can get an idea...

To reset the hidden files, you need to add a /H, but that doesn't seem to be the issue.

Can you take ownership of the files to give yourself rights back?

That did it. Somehow the entire folder was assigned ownership to some long number, instead of my user or the administrator. Changing the ownership allowed me to remove the read only setting. Weird.

Thanks for the help. :)

You're welcome. :9:

Did you create them on another PC? That long number is the SID of another user account (that your PC can't verifiy). Administrator accounts aren't the same across computers.

Yes, it was created on a past installation of Windows. But looking at the #, I think this happened when I upgraded my build of Windows 7 without a clean install. I've never had this trouble and have been managing my files this way for years.
