NC Community Colleges to Accept Illegal Aliens (1 Viewer)

It's community college. They deserve a shot at a poor education just like everybody else!

:hihi:

$7K is all the schools see. Hard to believe it is even an option to discuss isn't it?

NC used to be the easiest state to get Drivers License issued until recently. You would go in the DL office and they would have intrepretors handing them out like candy.

Don't they have to be graduates of U.S. high schools? Also, as has been pointed out, many of these illegal kids have been here since they were babies or small children. Many went to public schools for 12 years.

Yes...they have to have graduated from a US high school, but the fact remains that they are illegal. Surry County has a 12% unemployment rate and the community college is turning away former blue-collar workers that are trying to enroll and better themselves. I don't think that illegal aliens should get a seat in the classroom...but if the administration sees $7K tuition vs an in-state check for about a grand or two, who do you think probably will get in?

Hey only an illegal for one generation right? Just get here and have babies and your (the kids) in. Can't say I wouldn't do the same thing if I were in Mexico or Latin America. We need to have a better work program but like most things government related they can't come up with a solution.

NC has passed a law that allows community colleges to take financial advantage of an often poor segment of its population because of our nation's inability to pass immigration reform. Regardless of whether or not this segment of its population has been and intends on always being residents of NC, CCs will be allowed to charge a US high school graduate ChargeMaster rates, a/k/a out of state tuition, which supplements those paying in-state rates. And you're upset because a segment of the population that has not yet been granted US citizenship is allowed to go to college? Overcharging them isn't enough?

though on the surface it seems wrong that illegals should be allowed to attend community college, i think this is a situation where i'd support it, with one significant stipulation.

a college education is a purchased product. No one has a right to one. It doesn't really matter where your from, if your willing to buy a product it doesn't really matter what your legal status is. Colleges are not charged with determining the legal status of students and i really see no difference between paying tuition and buying a cheeseburger.

However, if you are illegal, you should not recieve any state or federal financial aid for tuition. Thoose types of benefits should be reserved for citizens.

give the state enough time and they will do what california did and allow them to not only pay in-state tuition but give them the money to do it with. I don't have a problem with people coming here to get an education but they should be legal and should pay the same as anyone else out of state. how fair is it that a legal citizen from texas would pay a higher fee than an illegal in a california collage.

It'll be something to see how this works out. Under current federal law, none of them are eligible for Title IV funding and most reputable scholarship foundations, as well as most private lender providers, require either citizenship or legal residency to receive funding.

For a few years, Texas has had in state tuition and state financial aid for illegal immigrants. And while Texas has far more illegal immigrants than every state except California, we're still talking about a very small number attending college here.
