I was on my way from one appointment to the next and looking forward to one last Taco Cabana meal in TX before heading home and found myself listening to Obama award the Congressional Medal of Honor to one of our fallen heroes in Afghanistan. Listening to the reading of the citation, I found myself welling up and becoming misty. It's not my typical response to anything, but it was so powerful. The curt and short military style reading from a non-professional lady speaker got me as she read the summary of the events.

It made me proud of our military and sad that they've sacrificed so much. It also made me very glad that my younger bro got bounced for injuries sustained in Bosnia so that we didn't have to worry about him for the past 6 years.

The bravery some of those guys display running into enemy fire to save their fellow troops and our fellow Americans is awesome.

Thank you, Sergeant First Class Jared Monti.

"Why I am dying to live if I'm just living to die, I'll keep fighting as long as there's a fighting reason to live". Bulldawg's sig line always makes me pause when ever I hear it or see it in and along with his posts.

Very poignant comment, but one that still reverberates over 35 years later after the man who said it was KIA over North Vietnam. I think it sums up the enormous amount of respect I have for the men and women of the armed forces.

No matter who our president is, and who is running our congress, our cities, states and more, its things like this that make me so proud to be an American.

My wife's grandpa passed away last month. The most tear jerking part of the ceremony was when a few young Navy men played Taps and took the flag off of his coffin and folded it...giving it to his widow.

It was so solemn and quiet when they were folding the flag. Just powerful.

here's a list of all Medal of honor winners. Only 3400 since the civil war

Brave souls, each and every one. My thoughts and prayers to all our armed forces. Thank you for a job well done for almost 250 years now.

"Courage is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities... because it is the quality which guarantees all others."

-Winston Churchill

Thank you all for my freedom.

Yeah the taps and flag draped coffin is a tough one. Not something one forgets quickly.
I can hear Taps being played on Ft. McClellan every night @ 10 PM. Even though the speakers are a few miles away, being situated on a hill allows the sound to drift across. It's especially moving on a cold, quite winter night...like the memories of souls lost on the battlefield calling out.

If that ceremony moved you, watch "Taking Chance" with Kevin Bacon. Absolutely one of the most moving tributes to our fighting forces ever made. Based on a true story.
