Eagles' defense faces big test in Brees

By Jeff McLane
Inquirer Staff Writer
Which is it?

That the Eagles' defense is a ferocious, quarterback-eating machine? Or that Carolina, their first opponent, was awful enough to be made a meal of?

That the Saints' Drew Brees is on pace to shatter every passing record in the history books? Or that Detroit is on pace to set every dubious NFL mark - half of them already seemingly held by, well, the Lions?

When the Eagles and Saints meet Sunday the answer to all these questions is likely to fall somewhere in the middle (except maybe the Detroit part)...

..."You don't fool with him," said cornerback Sheldon Brown, who faced Brees all four times the signal caller played the Eagles. "He's a complete quarterback. He can do it all. This guy is definitely the real deal. The stats don't lie"...

... "He gets them in and out of the huddle and [controls] the tempo of the football game," said Sean McDermott, who had a wildly successful first game in charge of the defense. "So that puts stress on the defense, and we have to be ready for that..."

Whatever. All this crap sounds like the garbage New England has put out for years. "Oh we respect them sooooo much, ooooohhh they're going to be soooo tough".....and they're facing Cinncinati. New England never believed that ****. And if you don't think the Eagles aren't sitting in meetings thinking they're going to knock the shine off Brees and the offense you're kidding yourself.

The Saints offense scares a lot of defenses but I don't think the Eagles are one of them.

I agree wholeheartedly. It's all coach-speak and buttering-up, if you ask me.

Yeah I mean there's such a thing as respecting your opponent but these guys sound like they have some kneepads ready for Sunday. It's sooooo over-the-top. Either they're intimidated or faking it like New England's always done.

I buy faking it over being intimidated.

Well yeah. We all know the song and dance that teams do with elite players like Brees. It's the thing that smart defenses do. Disarm them, then try to take their heads off. Their defense is self motivating, and I'm hoping that our offense has gotten past the level of having to rely on bulletin board material.

I guess it's a sign of arriving to that next level. I'm hoping that our team plays as if Sheldon Brown was talking trash, instead of coming out flat like we've seen all too often.

But if someone's putting a mircophone in their face, it's the only right thing to say.

Offense has never "relied" on bulletin board material. So I'm not sure what "next level" you're talking about.

The Eagles will be doing nothing but "fooling" with Brees this Sunday afternoon.:hihi:

Does anyone really expect him to say anything negative about him? Even if they were facing Kyle Orton, they would still have something positive to say about him.

I think they're a mixed bag, just like any other group. Some are peeing their pants, others are licking their chops. None of them are going to show much bravado in the press, just in case we win. Crow makes a sorry post game meal.

What a load....the Eagles D isn't intimidated in the least by the Saints O. If anything I think they're dying to prove how good they are against this Offense. I suspect that McDermott has spent 18 hours a day every day this week in the film room watching tape and scheming.

If I had to guess I'd say McDermott's going to blitz the hades out of the Saints in hopes of rattling Brees, putting a lot of hits on him, creating turnovers. He'll move Trent Cole all over the place trying to create pressure. Knowing Brees and Payton they will quickly counter scheme and take advantage of the Eagles aggression. If the OL can keep Brees clean through the first quarter....look out.

True. This is the game where Bushrod needs to step it up. The DT pressure was very minimal in the Detroit game compared to what the Eagles will bring. Brees won't be able to step up into a perfect pocket this week when Bushrod gets beat IMO.

Yeah. I'm expecting a few screens and draws, as well as many three-step drops, to slow the Eagles D on Sunday.
