Heard that today during the broadcast. Didn't completely shock me, with John Carney, Mark Brunell, and that 37 year old Long Snapper we got skewing the age a good bit, but it seemed misleading.

So I tracked down the age of our major contributors on offense

Drew Brees - 30

Reggie Bush - 24
Mike Bell - 26
Pierre Thomas - 25

Marques Colston - 26
Lance Moore - 26
Robert Meachem - 25
Devery Henderson - 27

Heath Evans - 31

Jeremy Shockey - 29
David Thomas - 26

Jammal Brown - 28
Jermon Bushrod - 25
Zach Strief - 26
Jon Stinchomb - 30
Jahri Evans - 26
Jonathon Goodwin - 31
Jamar Nesbit - 33
Carl Nicks - 26

This is an ascending offense. Not a single starter is anywhere close declining due to age. In fact, the only players on the entire offense you might even worry about starting to slip physically would be Nesbit and maybe Heath Evans (in terms of losing some of his athleticism).

The wide receiver and running back groups in particular seem very young, but the offensive line too (comparative to many olines). Only 2 starters are 30 or 31 (Stinchomb and Goodwin), and what most fans would identify as our main two building blocks (Nicks and Evans), they're both 26.

Obviously we won't be able to keep everyone, but this is a really young offense when you get down too it. Brees in particular, just because of his nature and the type of QB he is, easily has another 6 or 7 years in him at a really, really high level. Jeff Garcia was, what, 37 when he played us in 2006?

Defense is a bit of a different story with players like Sharper, Fujita, even Shanle is 30 I think. But even then, the key players for the future for me is the secondary, which outside of Sharper is very young.

We're actually number one after we signed Carney. Bumped past the Redskins. Our average is 27.74 I think.

I never heard stats about oldest and youngest team until this year. It's another one of those stupid things that ESPN says.

I'm thinking that Sharper has atleast 1-2 more years after this one for us.. He looks like he still has tons in the tank.

nfl isn't like other sports where you have to look longterm, in the nfl it's always about now, which for the saints, can expect a pretty good year

The difference between the oldest and the youngest teams are not that great, looks liike they are trying to give the impression that one has a bunch of 40 year olds on the roster while the other is full of rookies.

chart for the oldest to the youngest http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/4447/three-of-nine-oldest-teams-in-nfc-west

The oldest is the Skins with 28.02
The youngest is the Packers 26.16

Dropping one player Carneys age could bring you up or down that list 10 spots possibly.

And consider that we only had four draft choices, two of which are now on IR. Having practically no rookies bumps the average age up a bit.

Man, how old do I feel when nearly the entire Saints roster posted above is younger than me. And I'm 31!

The Saints do need to get a little younger next offseason. But now that they have all of their draft picks this year, they will be able to do that. Plus, Grant will probably be adios, and that will bring the average age down.

The idea that 40 is "old" is rapidly flying out the window, even for professional athletes. The 21st Century is a great time to be alive. Some of these 20-something-year-old NFL players today will still be playing 20 years from now. You read it here first.

Like the saying goes, there are 3 kinds of lies: lies, white lies, and statistics. This is one of those stats that misrepresents the situation. As all true Saints fans know, our team is not full of a bunch of "Billy Kilmer" retreads trying to make a last run for it. We are in our prime, baby.
