So, the Saints aren't just the top offense in the league currently, they are one of the most efficient defenses... just as many SR members have been conjecturing. ... and, as I'm sure most of us already knew, our special teams are atrocious. =)

well I take Special teams with a grain of salt since most teams see 3-5 kick offs per game. Our opponents have seen 7 or 8 in each of the past 2 games.

I hope something changes with our special teams. As long as our offense stays healthy and our defense stays in the top 10 in most important categories, the only thing stopping us from being a contender is if our ST loses games. Luckily it hasn't happened yet, but we also haven't had a close game yet.

Special teams were dramatically improved w/ the additions of Young and Roby from game 1 to game 2. Jenkins made big plays in both games and that should continue. Morestead will only get better and more consistent w/ more games under his belt. STs are hard to practice for in PS, most guys playing ST in PS are no longer on the team. Thats league wide, there were 4-5 ST TDs on week 1 and very few, if any in week 2. I am confident we will be ok.

As SP said yesterday, the thing we need to concern ourselves with the most is Scoring Defense and not giving up the big play. Scoring Defense is currently 22nd.

I think we have done a masterful job in the takeaway department (Greg Williams staple)

The concerns continue to be our pass defense (ranked 28th in the league).

other key stats:

Rushing offense - #8
Rushing defense - #5

Run the ball, stop the run and score points. I'd say we are doing the things necessary to be a very, very good team.

Well as far as pass defense is concerned the numbers are quite inflated due to the fact that we've jumped out to pretty big leads. The part I like about it is even though we've been thrown on a lot and given up yards our D's qb rating and completion percentage are exceptional along with healthy run d as the OP pointed out.

Ya but scoring tends to be a related to other stats. Usually if you are doing well in other stats scoring tends to be lower. I think the scoring issue will correct itself if we continue playing this way.

Like I said in another thread. Passing yards are really an overrated way over measuring passing defense success. A much better way is to look at defensive passer rating or adjusted net yards per passing attempt. Both of those stats consider passing TDs and Int. In addition, adjusted net yards per passing attempt considers sacks and sack yards. You can throw for a 500 yards per game if you were given enough attempts, but if you were picked 5 times and sacked 5 times and only made 1 TD in the process you wouldn't feel very good about throwing for 500

Ranking per http://www.pro-football-reference.co...s/2009/opp.htm

Defensive Passer Rating:
Saints - 1st

adjusted net yards per passing attempt
Saints - 7th

TD %
Saints - 5th

Special teams improved from week 1 to week 2... we got gashed a few times in week 1, and we only got gashed once this past week... we'll get even better in the weeks to come.

I thought we played OUTSTANDING special teams against Philly. Take away the on e long run and we were flawless. Moorstead is a weapon.

not *too* worried about special teams. Yeah, we need to make tackles, but we've kicked off, what, 17 times now already?

Its two games. Its as long season. Let's not get too giddy just yet. The schedule only continues to get tougher.

Take one game at a time. We will lose a game or two, and out stats will become less volitile with each additional game.

Coach Payton is telling his team to take it one game at a time. The only thing we are guaranteed is a 2-14 record. We are one sack away from a mediocre season, so let's take it one game at a time, and not worry yet about seasonal stats.

Yes, but I think that our passer rating differential is one of the statistics that shows both how strong our offense and our defense are at this point of the season, regardless of how early it is within the season.

It's also extremely indicative to see how poor our special teams rating is (blocked kick, long punt return and long kickoff return given up). I'm sure that we know how much we need to improve there, especially going into Buffalo to meet former Saints ST Coach Bobby April's squad (who are normally near the top of the rankings every year).

yes ... we are not bad .... lets see next game ... if they can stop TO and LEvans .. it will be a great sign

where is steve gleason, brian milne, and fred mcafee when you need them?
