Between the Numbers
We all know the Saints' offense is prolific. The numbers that back this up are just absurd.

The Saints lead the NFL in third-down conversion at 57.7 percent, are second in first downs with 51 (18 by rush, 31 by pass, 2 by penalty) and at 46.5 points per game, no team is within 11 points of the league's top-scoring team.

New Orleans ranks in the top 5 in yards per game (1), yards per play (2), passing yards per game (2), passing yards per play (2), first downs per game (2), third-down percentage (1) and points per game (1).

We knew that heading into the season the offense would be good.

But what about the defense, a unit that was in the back of the pack a season ago. It has long been said that if the Saints could get a defense to rank in the middle - somewhere around No.'s 14-17 - New Orleans would be unstoppable.

So far, it's a mixed bag on defense.

The defense is 21st in yards allowed per game (347), but rank No. 5 in rushing yards and rushing yards per play (59 and 2.88, respectively). The unit is ranked No. 14 in first downs allowed per game, No. 9 in third-down conversion rate and No. 7 in red-zone percentage.

The most important ranking, however, is the point differential and the Saints are No. 1 in the NFL there.

As for the D:

Simply remember that while last year's D wasn't good, they were only about 3-4 plays away from making us 10-6 and into the playoffs.

This year's schedule may be tougher....
But so is our D!

This is what I'm talking about. The D was absolutely horrible and terrifying to watch, yet the Saints were in just about all the games they lost and lost in the final drives of the game. This year will be totally different, last year Kolb and the Eagles would have hung 40 on that D and Stafford would look like an all-pro QB in his first ever start!
