SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The College Football Hall of Fame, which never managed to attract the number of visitors its organizers hoped for after moving it to South Bend in 1995, is being moved to Atlanta to bring it more exposure, organizers told the city.

The National Football Foundation notified the city of South Bend in a letter Tuesday that it is terminating its agreement with the city when its current lease ends on Dec. 31, 2010.

"We take this action not because of any failure on your part, but because we have an opportunity to take the exposure of the Hall of Fame to an entirely new level," wrote Archie Manning, chairman of the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame.

As some here know, I'm a die hard Irish fan, so having the HoF leave South Bend is a disappointment to me on a personal level. I enjoyed my visit there, and will make another trip next year before it moves.

I certainly do believe the HoF when they say this will give the organization/Hall a place to truly expand and grow. I would imagine they will see quite an increase in traffic via this move, just due to the sure accessibility of the new location. But at the same time, it just doesn't feel right. Atlanta? Love or hate Notre Dame, few places meant as much to college football's growth as that location. If there was going to be a move from South Bend I could think of 50 other more appropriate college football cities where the HoF could be located.

In the end of course none of this matters, but really, Atlanta?

The CFHOF needs to be somewhere in the South IMO. Where are the biggest and most die-hard CF fans? From Texas to Florida. In 2006, 15 of the top 40 teams in home attendance were teams considered southern teams. This is not to say fans in the midwest or west or east aren't great fans, but it seems southern teams have a ton of fans even when the team isn't very good while in other areas, outside of the Michigans and Ohio States and USCs, a lot of the smaller teams seem to have significantly smaller attendance during down periods.

I could be wrong though. That's just how it seems to me.

No, I think you're right on that point actually. Add in the fact that people don't make pilgrimages to northern cities outside of football games, then there are no additional "passerbys."

But still, Atlanta? I understand it's a large metropolis which can bring in more visitors in general, but I don't think college football when I think of Atlanta. But, I've essentially answered my own complaint, which is they obviously feel a large city will draw more than a South Bend or Tuscaloosa, etc...despite the history in those cities.

Well that stinks. I don't care one way or the other about Notre Dame the program (when they are good, I enjoy watching them and when they are bad, I do not pay them any attention) but no true college football fan can deny that South Bend is one of the best choices for the College Football Hall of Fame. I understand the logistics, however, but Atlanta, as a city, is boring in my opinion. Why not just throw it in Dallas if you're looking for a large population and accessible land? At least Texas would make some sense from a fan point of view.

By the way, I have no love for the city of Atlanta. I was just making a dumb SEC joke.

I have no clue what the logistics and economics behind this were. More then likely, Atlanta simply made a better pitch then other cities that tried to acquire the HOF. I'd love for it to be in New Orleans and attached to the Sugar Bowl game. Dallas (and the Cotton Bowl) would be nice as well. I do agree it needs to be in the South/Southeast, a major metropolitan center, but not freaking Atlanta.

But the decision was undoubtedly made on the basis of which metro-area was offering the most desirable deal. I seriously doubt the CF HOF "locked in" on Atlanta, they almost certainly made a list of requirements, circulated it, and took what was essentially the best offer.

Aren't most halls of fame located in the area where the game was invented or at least had some sort of roots?

With that said, it should be in New Jersey.
