While having a discussion about current politics and political theory on how it relates to events today she had this to say in her conclusion:

Communism means nothing until you have the conditions of communism in place.

That's a good example of a "Well, Duh" comment from an academic still trying to work out the kinks as a professor. Maybe she is relatively new and needs the time to adjust to a classroom setting and expectations. OR she could be tenured and not really have to worry as much about her job at the X University she works at. It would have made more sense if she had said Communism is something that looks wonderful on paper but in reality applying it falls short from ending up as meeting its Utopian vision. That's a more even-keeled comment to make IMO.

But then again like mike pointed out above, the same thing could be said for preventing or more effectively controlling teen pregnancy or world hunger. There are many things that look wonderful on paper and probably have sincere humanitarian convictions but upon being applied turn out to be complete disasters.

But thats common knowledge too, so it goes without saying.

I had a Human Resource professor who once told us "You can't polish a turd". He was talking about problem employees. 10 years later and I still use this little nugget of wisdom. :9:

seen on mythbusters that you can polish a turd. but its still just a shiny piece of ****

I had a poly sci prof say that communism would be great and could actually work if it weren't for people.
He's right.

It would work great is we were all completely altruistic people who had no care about the job or role they took in society and we werent selfish and needed monetary motivation and fear of monetary loss to spur us to action.

Unfortunately people are by and large selfish, manipulative, need direct motivations(doing whats good for the whole of society doesn't cut it) and arent always thinking altruistically and rationally.

If we all thought like ants communism might work.

Falls right in line with the saying, "My job would be great if it wasn't for all these customers."

here is one from my 12th grade civics teacher ... "A democracy is only as good as the people in it"

I never forgot that for some reason ....

And a people are only as informed as the quality of their inputs.

Thats why education and a strong and informative news and media are so vital to a functioning democracy.
